Case Against Tsarnaev Being Built in Collier's Death

Boston.com reports Middlesex County prosecutors are working with federal officials to charge Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the slaying of MIT officer.

  Middlesex County prosecutors are working with federal officials in an effort to build a murder case against 19-year-old Boston Marathon bombings suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the shooting death of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier on the Cambridge campus April 18, according to Boston.com. A spokeswoman for the Middlesex County District Attorney's office told Boston.com they believe they will have sufficient evidence to prosecute Tsarnaev for Collier's murder and should be determining the exact charges soon. The DA's office is looking to speak to anyone who was in the area of Vassar, Main, and Ames streets in Cambridge between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. April 18, Boston.com reported. Gov. Deval Patrick Appoints New Middlesex County District Attorney

Michael Pelgro has been serving as acting district attorney in Middlesex County.

Governor Deval Patrick announced this afternoon he has appointed Marian T. Ryan as Middlesex County District Attorney (DA), according to a press release issued by Patrick's office.  Ryan, who currently serves as the Middlesex DA's general counsel, will assume the responsibilities for the Middlesex County DA's Office as DA Gerald Leone recently stepped down from his post to join a private law firm.  A 30-year veteran of the Middlesex County DA's office, Ryan has served as general counsel and chief of the office's elder and disabled unit, the press release said. She has tried hundreds of cases in both district and superior courts and argued more than 40 cases in the Appeals Court and Supreme Judicial Court. “Marian brings a great wealth of …

Middlesex D.A. Gerry Leone to Step Down, Will Join Scott Brown at Law Firm

Leone will join the law firm of Nixon Peabody on April 29.

Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone is stepping down from his office to join the law firm of Nixon Peabody, the same firm former Sen. Scott Brown earlier this month said he was joining. An announcement from Nixon Peabody says Leone will join the firm as a partner in the government investigations and white collar defense practice beginning April 29. A woman at the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed the news, but did not have further details. Leone was first elected as Middlesex district attorney in 2006, and his current term in office was up in 2014. He previously stated he would not run for reelection at the end of his term. Middlesex Sheriff Responds to Inquiries on Political Future

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian issued a statement on Jan. 11 in response to inquiries on whether he would run for the Middlesex County District Attorney's seat.

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian is not ruling out a run to become the next Middlesex County District Attorney. In response to inquires on whether he would run to fill the seat Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone plans to vacate, Koutoujian said in a statement, "never say never." “I love my job as Sheriff of Middlesex County and am focused on the work before me. One of my guiding principles has always been to never say never to any opportunity in which I can provide benefit to the people I serve," Koutoujian said in the statement. Middlesex County DA Gerry Leone Announces He Will Not Seek Third Term

Leone said he has no specific plans after he leaves office.

Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone announced tonight he will not seek a third term in 2014, according to a press release issued by his office. Leone made the announcement during an awards ceremony with his staff on Jan. 10. “These decisions are, and should be, predicated upon what is best for the person and their family. What is best for me and my family is that I not seek another term. As someone who is much smarter than I am once said, ‘I must be willing to give up what I am, in order to become what I will be.’ Other than a husband and father, I am not yet sure what that will be when I am no longer a District Attorney,” Leone said in a statement. Middlesex DA Seeking Teen-Produced PSAs

The deadline to submit entries for the contest is the first week of May.

Middlesex County middle and high school students, including those in Newton, are invited to participate in the fourth annual PSA [Public Service Announcement] project. The Middlesex County District Attorney's office, in conjunction with Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, Inc., started the PSA Project in 2009 "in an effort to spark a positive dialogue and encourage teens to speak out about important issues affecting youth," according to a press release. Participants this year are asked to focus on the importance of promoting healthy, substance-free relationships. Students, any enrolled in a middle or high school in Middlesex County, are asked to produce 30 to 60 second PSAs on the following suggested topic subsets: “Adolescence is an …
