Two months after breaking ground on the site, the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee joined city officials and residents for a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony last weekend at the completed Newton Sept. 11 Memorial. The ceremony was held Saturday, Nov. 10, and included remarks from committee members, Mayor Setti Warren and family members of those Newton residents who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The memorial, which is located in front of Newton Fire Headquarters, includes a walkway with engraved bricks displaying personal messages from donors as well as granite steps that have an engraved timeline of Sept. 11, 2001. Less than a month after starting construction on the site, the Newton Sept. 11 Memorial is finally completed. Exactly a month after the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee broke ground on the site, crews have started construction of the local memorial that honors the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Newton Sept. 11 Memorial is located in front of Newton Fire Headquarters on Centre Street in Newton Centre. Along with "perennial grasses, spring bulbs and flowers," the memorial will include several elements representing the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the flight path of United Airlines Flight 93. After 18 months of planning, outreach and fundraising, the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee officially has a groundbreaking date for its memorial to honor the eight people Newton lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The committee will break ground on the new memorial next month during a ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. The Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee is hoping for a groundbreaking of Sept. 11, 2012.
A memorial that will honor Newton 9/11 victims has taken another big step forward. According to a press release issued last week by the Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee, the city and committee have signed an agreement that finalized the siting, installation and landscaping for the Newton 9/11 Memorial. Mayor Setti Warren, Newton 9-11 Memorial Committee Chair Sande Young, Newton Fire Chief Bruce Proia and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Bob DeRubeis signed the agreement on July 26.
