What's Going on at the Pond in Front of Newton City Hall?
The construction should be done soon, city officials say.
If you've tried to park or walk around Newton City Hall in the last few months, you've likely been met with construction vehicles and lots of orange fencing. So what exactly is going on at the pond in front of City Hall? And when will it be finished? Chief Operating Officer Bob Rooney told Newton Patch this week that crews have been working on dredging the pond and removing sediment that has built up over time. Rooney explained that the City Hall ponds were designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers in the 1930s and were intended to serve as reflecting pools for the building. From a functional standpoint, the ponds also catch sediment from the water that flows from the culverts near the library, before it drains into nearby Bullough's Pond…

How Would You Rate Newton's Customer Service/311 System?
The city received more than 800 snow-related requests during and after the Blizzard of 2013 -- did you make one of those requests?
Since the Blizzard of 2013 hit Newton, the city has received hundreds of service requests through its 311 customer service reporting system. Between Friday, Feb. 8 and Thursday, Feb. 14, City Hall received 801 service requests related to uncleared sidewalks, unplowed streets, streets needing sanding, requests for streets to be widened, illegal snow dumping and manhole covers that came loose as a result of plowing, according to Citizens Assistance Officer Aaron Goldman. Goldman said the city received 148 service requests between Feb. 11-14 related to uncleared sidewalks. Where is the Newton Health Department's New Location?
The Health Department recently made a move from its building at 1294 Centre St.
Earlier this month, we asked readers what they think the city should do with the Health Department building at 1294 Centre Street, as the department was planning to vacate the building and move to a new location. But where is the new office located? The city's Health & Human Services Department is now located in the Veterans Wing on the main (first) floor of Newton City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Ave. To get to the Veterans Wing, go through the front door of City Hall and walk straight back, down the middle corridor. The Health Department will be located on the left. The Health Department phone number (617-796-1420) will remain the same. Former Newton City Hall Employee Charged with Forgery
The assessors office employee was charged with falsely giving tax exemptions.
A former Newton City Hall employee has been charged with forgery after he was accused of wrongly giving elderly residents a $1,000 property tax exemption last year. Stanley Dobies, 62, is facing charges of forgery and filing a false report by a public worker, the Boston Globe reported. Dobies was arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty to the charges, the Globe reported. He could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. According to the Globe report, Dobies had been employed with the city for 26 years, but had been on medical leave for the last 19 months. He resigned on Nov. 20 as a result of the city's investigation. The city has increased oversight of the program and the assessor's office has started an internal audit to see if the …

More than 30 Newton Roads Remain Closed or Partially Closed
Parts of West Newton appear to have been hit the hardest with power outages, but trees are down all over the city.
Two days after Hurricane Sandy hit Newton, 33 streets remain closed or partially closed due to trees and large branches down in the roadway. According to information sent from the mayor's office Wednesday afternoon, the closed roads are spread throughout the city, with a large group in West Newton and another cluster in Newton Upper Falls and Newton Highlands. PHOTOS: Movie Crews Film 'The Makeover' at Newton City Hall
A few city officials got to chat with some of the stars of the TV movie, including Julia Stiles.
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, Newton City Hall was used as a filming location for the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie "The Makeover" starring Julia Stiles. Roughly 150 cast and crew members spread out around the grounds, shooting scenes involving a political character running for office: Elliot Doolittle. According to Boston.com, Doolittle is a blue-collar candidate from Southie running for Congress in the movie. Stiles plays a former congressional candidate who tries to coach Doolittle into a winning politician. City officials and employees had a chance to meet some of the stars of the movie, including Stiles. Although the filming was only scheduled for Tuesday, crews will be back on scene tomorrow to finish cleaning up the set. Check out more …
