Newton South topped the list with 42 awards, more than any other Newton school.
With more than 80 awards won by 70 students, Newton was certainly well-represented in this year's Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Among Newton's high schools, Newton South High School took home the most honors, with 42 awards between 33 students. The 42 awards at Newton South included 20 Gold Key Awards, 12 Silver Key Awards and 10 Honorable Mentions, according to a press release issued by the Newton South Arts Department. In addition, Newton South students won the most film and animation awards of any school in the state, the press release said. The Boston Globe named student athletes to its fall All-Scholastic honors list
Three students from Newton South, Newton North and Newton Country Day School were named in this year's Boston Globe Fall All-Scholastic Honors. Newton South freshman Rebecca Grusby was recognized for her work on the South girls' cross country team. According to the All-Scholastic write-ups in the Globe, Grusby started the season by sweeping the freshman course at the Frank Kelly Invitational. In addition, she won the Bob McIntyre Twilight meet, finished second in the Dual County Championship and Eastern Mass. Division 1 race and finished fifth in the Div. 1 All-State meet. Newton Country Day, Newton South and Newton North are all participating in the state tournament.
Three Newton schools are participating in this year's Mass. Mock Trial tournament, which is sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association. Here is an update on the recent Newton matches: Newton North High School Newton North defeated Newton Country Day in its first match of the season 93-87 on Jan. 24. However, Newton North fell to Belmont Hill last Thursday (Feb. 2) 86-84, according to teacher Coach David Hawkins. Newton South High School Newton South defeated Belmont High School 84-82 on Jan. 25.
