Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 26

NNHS lacrosse, the Boston College Arts Festival and a Russian Cultural Festival.

1. Russian cultural festival. After being postponed last weekend, Newton's "From Russia with Art and Culture" festival will kick off tonight with a grand opening celebration at the Newton Cultural Center. The celebration will include a concert as well as remarks, which start at 5 p.m. The cultural festival will continue tomorrow, April 27 and Sunday, April 28 at the Cultural Center. 2. Tomorrow: Medication take back day. The Newton Police Department will host a medication take-back day tomorrow, April 27, at Newton Police Headquarters in West Newton from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Residents are welcome to donate prescription and over-the-counter medications anonymously. The city kicked off its new Heritage Festival series this month with French and Chinese cultural events at the Newton Cultural Center. Upcoming Heritage Festivals include a Latin American Festival on March 23 and a Russian Cultural Festival April 19-21.

Newton Celebrates World Cultures with Heritage Festival Series [Video]

Mayor Setti Warren and Director of the Mayor's Office for Cultural Affairs Linda Plaut kicked off a new series of Newton Heritage Festivals at a press conference Friday afternoon.

It all started last spring with a Russian cultural festival that was so successful, the local Indian community wanted to replicate the celebration. Then came the idea for a Chinese cultural festival, a French festival and before too long, Newton had a full schedule of cultural celebrations lined up for the months of March and April.  "We're here to announce the Newton Heritage Festivals, which bring together private sector companies, restaurants and entities that have been working and partnering with Newton for many years...so we can promote commerce, culture and the arts as well as promote the diversity Newton has to offer," Mayor Setti Warren said at a kick-off press conference Friday, Feb. 22.
