Newton North Taking Precautions After Alleged Threats on Facebook

Officials say a student made threats on Facebook related to the upcoming junior elections.

Newton Police will be at Newton North High School Tuesday in response to alleged threats made on Facebook by a former student. Newton North Principal Jennifer Price sent a note to the school community explaining that a former student allegedly made threats on Facebook related to the school's junior elections on Tuesday, according to the Newtonite page on Facebook. Price's announcement reports that Newton Police, "successfully worked with the individual involved and his family to de-escalate the situation," and that the student and his family have agreed to spend this week in western Massachusetts. The student and his family have also apologized for the comments, Price wrote in her announcement. Still, Price wrote, police officers will be …

Newsweek Ranks Newton North as One of America's Best High Schools

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday and included roughly 2,000 schools.

Newsweek has ranked Newton North High School as #982 in its list of America's Best High Schools.  However, Newton South High School, which frequently out-ranks Newton North in other high school rankings, did not make the Newsweek list.  In May 2012, Newton South was ranked as the 11th best high school in Massachusetts and #237 nationally by the U.S. News & World Report. Meanwhile, Newton North was ranked #36 in the state and #637 nationally. When Boston Magazine ranked Boston-area high schools in September 2012, Newton South came in at #7 and Newton North at #11.  For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013…

New Wheels Help Spread Innovation Across Newton Schools

Thanks to a donation from Village Bank, the Newton Public Schools' Innovation Lab was able to purchase a bus that will help students explore innovation in Newton and Greater Boston.

From bike-powered smoothies to recipes for biodiesel, there are dozens of creative and inspiring projects being built inside Newton North's Innovation Lab.  Now, the those ideas -- and the students behind them -- are ready to hit the road.  Thanks to a $40,000 gift from The Village Bank, the Newton Public Schools' Innovation Lab can now purchase two, 15-passenger buses to help expand innovative learning experiences for students across the district.  "A couple of years ago, when the idea of the Innovation Lab first bubbled up, we started thinking about the students and what we could do to connect and maintain the community they come from," says Steve Chinosi, the Lab's Chief Innovation Officer. Newton's New 'Fashioneering' Course Aims to Draw More Female Engineering Students

The program will be offered at Newton North starting next year.

What do you get when you combine clothing and costume design with new technology and engineering skills?  "Fashioneering," of course.  Starting next school year, Newton North will be offering a newly-designed Fashioneering course, a class that teachers hope will help bring more females into the high school's engineering program. "We're aiming to teach kids to think more about making things on their own, and we're trying to attract more girls into the engineering program," Newton North engineering teacher Kevin Brosnan told Newton Patch. According to Brosnan, female students make up between 15-20 percent of the school's engineering program, with the number of girls varying from course to course.  Ideally, Brosnan said the school would like …

Newton North Students Work to Save Lives Halfway Around the World

The Newton North InvenTeam is working on a solar-powered pedestrian alert system that will help prevent traffic/pedestrian accidents and fatalities in Ethiopia.

Although the streets of Ethiopia are thousands of miles away from Newton, students from the Newton North High School InvenTeam are dedicating countless hours every week to saving lives in the African country.  The Newton North InvenTeam is working on the design and construction of a solar-powered pedestrian alert system to be used in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the country's capital.  "As an ancient civilization, Ethiopia was very prosperous, but now it is struggling with certain social and economic issues," said Felege Gebru, one of the students working on the project. "Poverty isn't something we can fix in our lab, but we can try to tackle the issue of road traffic safety." The project hits close to home for Gebru, who was born in Ethiopia…

Three Newton Students Win National Art Awards

The three Newton students were honored as part of the 90th Annual National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

After taking home top prizes in the state competition, three Newton students were recently honored with awards in the 90th Annual National Scholastic Art & Writing Contest.  The three Newton students earned silver medals in the national competition, according to a recent report on Boston.com. The students are: The Massachusetts students who qualify for the national competition must earn Gold Key awards in the state competition. Newton high school students earned a total of 26 Gold Key Awards in the state competition, 20 of which were awarded to Newton South students. According to Boston.com, 92 Massachusetts students grades 7-12 were honored at the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, placing the state as the fourth largest medal …
