Newton Basketball Playoff Run Comes to an End

The Newton South girls' basketball team and Newton North boys' basketball team both played semifinal matches last night.

After beating the odds for three post-season victories, the No. 17 Newton South girls' basketball team ended their South Div. 1 playoff run last night with a 54-53 semifinal loss to No. 4 Franklin.  Meanwhile, the No. 2 Newton North boys' basketball team fell to No. 6 North Quincy in a South Div. 1 semifinal match last night, ending their season with a 51-47 loss at UMass Boston. Over at Massasoit-brockton, the Lions led early on in the game. Franklin would eventually come back to lead at the end of the half and at the end of the third quarter, according to the NSHS Denebola game story. Newton South Girls' Basketball Shocks Cross-Town Rival in Playoff Victory

In a thrilling overtime finish, the No. 17 Newton South girls' basketball team (11-10) defeated No. 1 Newton North Wednesday night, 49-45, securing a spot for the Lions in the South Div. 1 quarterfinals.  Although Newton South came in as the underdogs, they jumped on their opponents early on in the game, taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, the Newton South Denebola reported.  Going into the half, North had a 20-18 lead, but the Lions regained ground and had a 35-33 lead heading into the final quarter, the Denebola reported. After trading the lead in the fourth quarter, North eventually tied it up and the two teams went into overtime.  Once the teams were into extra time, both senior captain Kayla Burton and junior Lauren Levey sunk …

Newton North, South Basketball Teams Headed to Playoffs

The Newton North girls' ice hockey team will also head to the Div. 1 playoffs.

Newton will be well-represented in this year's South Div. 1 basketball playoffs, as all four teams from Newton North and Newton South are headed to the post-season.  The Newton North girls' team landed the top spot in this year's South Div. 1 tournament with a 19-1 regular season record. The team has a bye in the preliminary round and will play a first round game on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at Newton North. The No. 1 Tigers will face the winner of a Newton South-Taunton game played earlier in the week. With an 18-3 regular season record, the Newton North boys' team was seeded in the No. 2 spot in the South Div. 1 tournament and has a bye in the preliminary round. Hard-Fought Playoff Run Comes to an End for Newton North

The boys basketball team fell in the South Div. 1 semi-finals last night.

Despite an impressive second half and a strong fourth quarter drive, the Newton North boys' basketball team was not able to defeat Brockton Wednesday night in the South Div. 1 semi-finals.  The #4 Brockton Boxers beat out the #5 Tigers 49-44, the Boston Globe reported this morning.  According to the Globe report, the Boxers outrebounded Newton North 40-20. However, Brockton almost lost an 18-point lead in the final seconds of the game, until Brockton's Jamal Reuben blocked a three-point shot from Newton's Michael Thorpe to break the Tigers' streak. Thorpe led the Tigers with nine points, six rebounds and five assists, the Globe said.  According to Mayor Setti Warren's Twitter feed, the Tigers had full support in the crowd during the game…

As a player for the Newton North girls' varsity basketball team, she averages 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. Newton North Pulls Out Last-Minute Tournament Win

Trailing by as much as 18, the Stoughton girls’ basketball team came back, took the lead, but couldn’t hold it down the stretch, as Newton North secured a 49-45 win in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional tournament.

Midway through the second quarter, the Stoughton High girls’ basketball team trailed Newton North 32-14 in a game that looked like the Tigers would put away by halftime. But the Black Knights went to a press defense and went on a 23-3 run, tying the game at 35 with 1:51 left in the third and taking the lead a little more than a minute later on a Chrystal Holland layup. Stoughton trailed by one, 38-37, going into the fourth, but held a 45-42 lead with 3:42 left to play. Newton Basketball Teams Head Into the Playoffs

Both the Newton North girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams are in the South Div. 1 tournament this year.

Let the tournament games begin. Coming off a strong 17-3 season, the Newton North boys' varsity basketball team received the fifth seed in this year's South Div. 1 tournament. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) announced the brackets yesterday.  The Tigers will face Marshfield (#12) in a first round game on Thurs., March 1 at Newton North High School. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.  Last year, the boys made it all the way to the South Div. 1 finals, where they faced Mansfield at the TD Garden in Boston. Despite the hard-fought battle and close match, the Tigers walked away with a heartbreaking 48-46 loss. But the boys' team is not the only Newton squad heading to this year's tournament. Newton Athletes Featured in High School Sports Weekly

Luke Westman and Michael Thorpe -- guards for the Newton North boys' basketball team -- were featured in a video this week put together by High School Sports Weekly.

As the Basketball season starts to heat up, two local Newton North stars were recently featured in High School Sports Weekly, which profiles athletes from Greater Boston.  This week's edition, which was released yesterday, features Luke Westman and Michael Thorpe, two Newton North seniors who are leading the Tigers' basketball team this season.  Both Westman and Thorpe are multi-sport athletes at Newton North, with Westman playing soccer, basketball and volleyball and Thorpe playing football, basketball and volleyball.  The High School Sports Weekly video highlights the skills of Westman and Thorpe as well as their friendship on and off the court.  According to Boston.com, Newton North is 1-0 on this season, winning last night against …
