The Tigers faced King Philip in the Central/East Div. 1 finals on Saturday.
After the championship slipped out from their hands last season, the Newton North girls' volleyball team held on this season to bring home the Central/East Div. 1 title. The Tigers swept King Philip High School Saturday night at Babson College to take the sectional championship with a 3-0 victory. Similar to last season, the Tigers entered the playoffs in the No. 1 spot and moved through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds with two 3-0 victories. But last year, the No. 3 Brookline High stopped Newton North's playoff momentum and took the sectional title. This year, though, the Tigers pounced early with a 25-9 victory in the first set. Later in the second set, King Philip kept it close again early on, taking a 5-3 lead a one point, but…

The Tigers hosted Mount Alvernia High School on Friday, Sept. 7.
With just one meet down this season, members of the Newton North girls' swimming and diving team already have the state meet on their minds. During the first meet of the season -- a "friendly rivalry" against Mount Alvernia High School on Sept. 7 -- the Tigers swam two state qualifying times, according to coach Kirsten Tuohy. "We were very impressed with the performances of all competitors and have great expectations for the rest of the season," Tuohy said in an email. Both Ariana Paone (226.42 points) and Monica Kieff (177.75 points) tallied the first of two required scores to qualify for the state meet, Tuohy said. In addition, the Tigers finished the 200-yard medley relay in 2:02.98, a race that included Sammi Chan, Niki Lew (captain…

This is not the first national title for the Newton North junior.
After earning a national title in the indoor triple jump earlier this year, Newton North junior Carla Forbes has added two more titles to her long list of accolades. Forbes finished first in both the long jump and triple jump at the New Balance Outdoor Track National Championships on Friday and Saturday, June 15-16. The championship meet took place at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, NC. The track star started the weekend with a triple jump title on Friday, finishing in first place with a jump of 42'09.5'', nearly seven inches more than the second place spot. Forbes also took first place in the long jump with a jump of 19'9", five inches longer than the second place finisher. Aside from her long list of titles, Forbes has …

An update on the latest MIAA tournament games played by teams at Newton North and Newton South.
Baseball After one of the more exciting seasons in the school's recent history, the Newton North baseball team made its way to the North Div. 1 finals Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. The Tigers, who faced the top-ranked Lowell team, fell in a close 2-1 game. The loss, though, is only a small blemish on what was an impressive run through the tournament bracket; ranked No. 22 (out of 23 teams), the Newton North team beat the odds to make it to the final game. Prior to Saturday's match against Lowell, the Tigers defeated No. 7 Acton-Boxborough 8-7 in the division semifinals and No. 3 St. John's Prep 7-4 in the quarterfinals. Before that, North had a comeback 5-4 win against Billerica in the first round of the tournament and a …

One team finishes a season and the other one continues on in the tournament.
Baseball Despite their No. 22 seed (out of 23 teams total) the Newton North baseball team has proven its skill and fought all the way to the North Div. 1 finals. The Tigers, who defeated No. 7 Acton-Boxborough 8-7 yesterday, will head to the finals tomorrow, June 9, at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. They will face the winner of the Malden vs. Lowell semifinal game to be played this afternoon. Prior to their semifinal win yesterday, the Tigers defeated No. 3 St. John's Prep 7-4 in the division quarterfinals and had a comeback 5-4 win against Billerica in the first round of the tournament. Their successful run all started with a 10-7 preliminary round victory over Lexington. Overall this season, the Tigers have moved to a record of 14-10. …

Both the softball and baseball teams will face Acton-Boxborough in the North Div. 1 semifinals.
Softball With a 6-1 lead and just two innings to go, the No. 3-ranked Newton North softball team had all but solidified its space in the North Div. 1 semifinal match. But the No. 11-ranked Chelmsford Lions were not about to go quietly -- it took an extra-inning push before the Tigers could come out on top 8-7 in the quarterfinal game. Just as the sun started to come out at the top of the sixth inning, the Lions began to show some life. A long fly ball to left field followed by a pair of line drives brought the Chelmsford team to 6-3. Before their half inning was over, though, the Lions would get one more to close the gap further and leave it 6-4 for the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth. Chelmsford pitcher Kaela DeAngelis (who stepped in …
