Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 7

A family concert, a food drive and a flower/garden show.

1. Family Discovery Series Concert. The New Philharmonia Orchestra will present another Family Discovery Series concert this afternoon at 3 p.m. Today's program will feature Nathaniel Stookey’s "The Composer is Dead", from the “whodunit?” book by Lemony Snicket. The concert will run roughly one hour and will include the New Phil's acclaimed New Phil Instrument Petting Zoo at the end of the show. The concert will be held at the First Baptist Church in Newton. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $10 for students. 2. Newton Open Studios. 1. Newton Open Studios. The annual Spring Open Studios will take place this weekend at 60 "pop-up" exhibits across the city. Spring Open Studios to Feature 180 Newton Artists at 'Pop-Up' Exhibits

The Spring Open Studios will take place this weekend, April 6-7, 2013.

It's that time of year again when homes and businesses across the city will transform into galleries filled with the artwork of local, Newton artists.  Newton Open Studios' annual Spring Open Studios will take place this weekend, April 6-7, at nearly 60 locations across the city. These "pop-up" exhibits will feature paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, collages and jewelry from 180 Newton artists. But if you're hungry for local art and cannot wait until this weekend -- the NOS celebration will kick off tonight, April 3, with an opening reception at the Newton Free Library from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. New Art Exhibit Fills the Walls at NewTV

Eight Newton artists explore the still life format in this latest exhibit.

No, it's not just television cameras and monitors that fill the studios at NewTV. A new Newton Open Studios exhibit recently opened at the Needham Street television studio featuring eight local artists who explore the still life format.  The Small Stage: Still Life, Part II exhibit features pieces that "perch in unusual places, occasionally verge on abstraction, and examine unexpected objects," leaving the viewer with a new perspective on the boundaries of the still life genre.  The display is the second installment of the Small Stage: Still Life exhibit. The first half, which featured five NOS artists, was on display at NewTV in May and June. Newton Art Takes Center Stage at Annual Spring Open Studios

Nearly 180 Newton artists will have their work on display this weekend as part of Newton Open Studios' Annual Spring Open Studios event.

Although Newton photographer Sharon Schindler just recently started focusing on promoting her work, she's been looking at life through a camera lens for years. "Ever since I picked up my first 35mm camera I've been hunting images," Schindler says.  Schindler, who recently put together a book of photos of the old Newton North High School, is one of nearly 180 Newton artists featured in this weekend's Spring Open Studios, and one of several who attended the show's preview event Tuesday night at the Newton Free Library. The annual Newton Open Studios (NOS) event will run this Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20, at more than 50 locations across Newton. Last Chance: Local Art Displays and Deadlines

Check out some local art and submit your own before it's too late.

There are quite a few art-related deadlines this week in Newton, including a last chance to see some local art displayed at Newton City Hall. The Newton Open Studios' first juried art show Monochrome and Minimalism will be on display in the mayor's office through tomorrow, May 15. The exhibit, which can be viewed from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., has been on display since February. You should also mark your calendars for Newton Open Studios' Annual Spring Open Studios, which is slated for this weekend, May 19-20. A printable guide to the different art display locations is included in the .pdf section to the right, or you can view an interactive map on the NOS website. First Juried Art Show Hits the Walls at Newton Mayor's Office

A reception was held for the new exhibit on Friday, Feb. 17.

Although it has been a location for local artwork for more than a year, the mayor's office at Newton City Hall has opened its doors—and walls—to the first juried art show in that space.  Newton Open Studios' (NOS) newest exhibit, Monochrome and Minimalism, will be on display in the mayor's office until May 15. The public can stop in and view the art Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. A reception was held on Friday, Feb. 17 to welcome the new juried artwork. According to NOS Director Ellen Fisher, the exhibit coincides with the installation of a new hanging system that NOS purchased and is lending long-term to City Hall. A Glimpse at the Newton Open Studios Fall 2011 Show

A Juror Award exhibit at the NewTV Gallery acts as a preview for the Newton Open Studios Fall 2011 Juried Art Show on Nov. 5 and 6.

As a precursor to the annual fall Newton Open Studios art show later this week, ten artists were recently selected for the "Juror Award," and asked to display their work at the NewTV gallery. "This is a great chance for artists to show their work, and for the community to get involved," said Ellen Fisher, Director of Newton Open Studios.  The 35 pieces of artwork at the preview gallery are a mix of photography, digital artwork and paintings. All artists included in the gallery live in Newton or have strong ties to Newton, Fisher said.  The preview is just a taste of the Open Studios Fall Juried Show and Sale on Novemeber 5 and 6, where the work of 35 artists will be displayed at the Newton Cultural Center.
