UPDATED 4:40 p.m.: Newton Police Chief Terminated

Newton Mayor Setti Warren has fired Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings.

Updated 4:40 p.m. with comments form Mayor Warren After a six-hour hearing yesterday in Newton City Hall, Mayor Setti Warren has decided to officially fire Police Chief Matthew Cummings. In a letter sent early Thursday afternoon, Warren stated the following: Pursuant to paragraph 5 of your current Chief of Police's contract and after a hearing and findings of fact by Hearing Officer Robert P. Rooney, you are hereby terminated as Chief of Police for the City of Newton. A 32-year veteran of the department, Cummings was placed on administrative leave in late August after an investigation concluded there was "sufficient" evidence that he verbally humiliated his secretary and kicked her in the foot. Investigation: Newton Chief Made Inappropriate Comments, Kicked Employee [VIDEO]

Police Chief Matthew Cummings was asked to leave his position this morning. Details were released today regarding his leave.

Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings kicked and verbally harassed his former secretary in 2010, according to findings released today from an independent investigation.  Cummings, who has been with the department for more than 30 years, was placed on paid administrative leave today and Mayor Setti Warren has initiated the process of Cummings' removal.  "I am deeply disappointed," Warren said during a press conference this afternoon at City Hall. Newton Police Chief Has Been Asked to Leave

Mayor Setti Warren says he is "initiating the process of removal" of Chief Matthew Cummings.

The mayor has asked the police chief to leave. In a news conference this afternoon, Newton Mayor Setti Warren said he had this morning asked Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings to leave. Cummings has, in the meantime, been put on paid administrative leave. The shakeup comes after a report from an independent investigator found "sufficient credible evidence" of two complaints about Cummings made by the chief's former secretary, Jeanne Sweeney Mooney. In this afternoon's news conference, Warren said he was "deeply disturbed" and "disappointed." "This is not the kind of behavior we expect," the mayor said.
