Not Really a Fair Trade Newton Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle on Beacon Street on May 12. According to police reports, the vehicle's owner said he parked his Subaru station wagon in the driveway at about 10 p.m. on May 11. He left the doors unlocked with the keys under the driver's side floor mat. At about 6 a.m. on May 12, police reports say, he noticed the vehicle missing from the driveway. A bicycle had been placed in the area of the driveway where the vehicle was parked. B&E and Trespassing Newton Police arrested Jonathan Payne, 22, on May 12, after a caller reported that Payne was currently trespassing in a Christina Street home. The Music Was Not Loud Enough... A Burlington man was arrested on May 5 after he allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol and fell asleep behind the wheel of his car in Newton Corner. According to Newton Police reports, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Washington Street and Centre Street for reports of a male party asleep behind the wheel of a red Mercedes. When officers arrived, they found the car stopped at the traffic signal, just before the on-ramp to the Mass Pike. Reports said the driver was asleep behind the wheel with the doors locked and loud music playing. The vehicle was running and in neutral. License charges, warrant arrest Newton Police responded to Quinobequin Road on May 1 after State Police tried to pull over a vehicle, but lost the car in the area. A detail officer on Woodward Street managed to pull the vehicle over, reports said, and found the driver was driving with a suspended license. The driver also had a warrant out for his arrest. David M. Katz, 57, of 100 Andrew St., was arrested on a warrant out of Lawrence District Court, possession of a class A substance (subsequent offense). He was also cited for driving with a suspended license, police said. Calling AAA...Under the influence A Wellesley man was arrested on April 26 after he allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol and attempted to call AAA after losing a wheel on his vehicle. According to Newton Police reports, officers were dispatched at 9:11 p.m. Friday, April 26, after AAA called the police to report an intoxicated driver attempting to have his tire changed. When officers arrived on scene, they found a man in the driver's seat of a Mercury Marquis, which was still running. A knife-wielding suspect reportedly robbed the Sunoco Service Station in Newton Centre on Sunday, April 28. According to Newton Police reports, officers were dispatched to the service station (325 Boylston St.) just after 6:30 a.m. Sunday for reports of an armed robbery. The reporting party told police she was going about her day in a usual manner when the suspect walked through the door with a knife pointed at her. The suspect told the woman to "open the register" and "go faster." The suspect was described as a black male in his late 20s, average height with brown eyes. Assault with Pruning Shears Newton Police responded to Newton-Wellesley Hospital on April 22 to speak with someone regarding a stabbing that had occurred earlier in the day on Farwell Road in Newton. As a result of the incident, Gustavo A. Diaz, 44, of 49D Harvard St., Waltham, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (pruning shears), police said. According to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office, Diaz was arraigned in Newton District Court on Tuesday, April 23, and released on personal recognizance. He was ordered not to abuse the victim and is due back in court for a pretrial conference on June 11, the DA's office said. The Newton Police Department will host a Medication Take Back Day this Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Newton Police Headquarters. Police will accept prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medications (tablets, capsules) and dispose of them safely and properly. The drop-off will be located at the Support Services Bureau, which is behind Newton Police Headquarters, 1321 Washington St., West Newton. Newton Police will be conducting patrols and compliance checks throughout the city.
The Newton Police Department was recently awarded a $10,000 grant to help enforce underage drinking laws in the city. The grant will allow the department to deploy plainclothes officers to various Newton bars, restaurants and retail establishments to monitor the sale of alcohol, the Department said in a press release. The grant was funded through the fiscal 2013 Underage Alcohol Enforcement Grant Program, which is part of the Office of Public Safety and Security, Office of Grants and Research, Highway Safety Division. Newton was one of 24 Massachusetts police departments chosen for the grant program, the press release said.
