Newton Storm Info: Snow Emergency in Effect, Schools Closed Friday

The Newton Free Library is open regular hours today.

Updated 2:35 p.m. If you're planning to take the commuter rail out of Newton today, make sure to check the MBTA's alert page before heading out. The Framingham/Worcester line has faced some delays today due to the weather. 1:45 p.m. The National Weather Service has extended the Winter Storm Warning to 7 p.m. Friday, March 8. 12:45 p.m.  Check out this map from the National Weather Service to see how much snow has fallen in Newton.  Do you have snow totals from your home in Newton? Was it the Right Call to Close Newton Schools Monday?

Many parents and teachers took to social media Sunday night to express their opinions about Monday's school cancellation in Newton.

After the Friday-Saturday blizzard dumped nearly two feet of snow on Newton, school officials decided Sunday night to cancel school for Monday, Feb. 11.  Once the announcement was made, several parents and teachers took to social media to express their opinions on the decision to cancel school. Yes, yes and yes to everything you said. Drove my kid to NNHS today and was appalled at houses ON WALNUT STREET who hadn't shoveled their walks, and watching kids just climb snow banks to get to school, fighting alongside cars attempting to park and regular busy morning traffic. UPDATED: Newton Public Schools Closed Monday, Feb. 11

The cleanup continues from the Friday-Saturday blizzard.

Updated 6:41 p.m. Although the snow stopped more than 24 hours ago, the Newton Public Schools will be closed tomorrow as the cleanup continues from this weekend's blizzard. All schools, including the preschool at the Education Center and Lincoln-Eliot Elementary, will be closed Monday, Feb. 11, according to an email from NPS Coordinator of Communication and Community Engagement Megan Smallidge. The Education Center will be open Monday. In an email to Newton Patch, Smallidge clarified that district officials decided to cancel school over concerns about narrow roadways and dangers to pedestrians. I agree but will it be any better any day this week? Parents have to decide if they can get there kids to school safely or keep them home. Sidewalks will not be clear this week.   more ›
