It's been 17 years since the Newton South boys' hockey team found its name in a playoff bracket -- but this year may be different. The Lions need just one point to make it to the state tournament, meaning that they need either a win or a tie against top-seeded Lowell this Friday, Feb. 22. "It's exciting," says Head Coach Chris Ryberg. "The kids are excited to face a team that is in our league -- that will make [the game] all the more sweet." Friday's game against No. 2 Lowell will be held at 4 p.m. in the Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Fans are encouraged to attend and to cheer on the Newton South team. The young varsity squad is currently 4-4-1 in the Dual County/Merrimack Valley League and 8-8-1 overall, which amounts to a total of 19 points …

Newton South defeated Swampscott 2-1 in the finals of the Deep Freeze tourney Tuesday and Lions Goalie Charles Egan took home the tournament MVP.
Swampscott hockey mounted a relentless assault on the Newton South goal in the final minute of Tuesday's Deep Freeze championship game. But the Lions' goalie, Charles Egan, was up to the task. He stayed at home in the crease and turned away bid after Big Blue bid. He also got a little help from a friend — the post. Swampscott rapped a shot off the pipe with less than a minute to play. Swampscott Coach Gino Faia said his team needed to play with intensity all three periods. "(It was) a little too late with the frantic play," he said. The coach credited the play of the Newton goalie saying he played the angles well. Swampscott's lone goal came about midway through the first period on a power play.
