An update on the latest MIAA tournament games played by teams at Newton North and Newton South.
Baseball After one of the more exciting seasons in the school's recent history, the Newton North baseball team made its way to the North Div. 1 finals Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. Although they started this season determined for a championship title, the Lions lost 3-2 to Cambridge Rindge and Latin in a Central-East Div.1 first round tournament game.
CAMBRIDGE -- Four points away from a decisive game five victory, the Newton South girls volleyball team appeared to be in the driver’s seat Friday night to advance to the Div. 1 Central-East sectional quarterfinals. But those travel plans were canceled as the Lions let slip a six-point lead, losing the set 15-12 to Cambridge Rindge and Latin. The other scores were 16-25, 25-20, 21-25, and 25-18. “A little inconsistent coming down the end,” said Newton coach Todd Elwell. “Sometimes that pressure can be a little tough on you. But they also had to take it away from us. Not like we totally gave it to them. They played really well.” Last year, the Lady Lions progressed through the tournament to reach a semi-final match against Quincy. However…
