An update on the latest MIAA tournament games played by teams at Newton North and Newton South.
Baseball After one of the more exciting seasons in the school's recent history, the Newton North baseball team made its way to the North Div. 1 finals Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. The Tigers, who faced the top-ranked Lowell team, fell in a close 2-1 game. The loss, though, is only a small blemish on what was an impressive run through the tournament bracket; ranked No. 22 (out of 23 teams), the Newton North team beat the odds to make it to the final game. Prior to Saturday's match against Lowell, the Tigers defeated No. 7 Acton-Boxborough 8-7 in the division semifinals and No. 3 St. John's Prep 7-4 in the quarterfinals. One team finishes a season and the other one continues on in the tournament.
Baseball Despite their No. 22 seed (out of 23 teams total) the Newton North baseball team has proven its skill and fought all the way to the North Div. 1 finals. The Tigers, who defeated No. 7 Acton-Boxborough 8-7 yesterday, will head to the finals tomorrow, June 9, at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. They will face the winner of the Malden vs. Lowell semifinal game to be played this afternoon. Prior to their semifinal win yesterday, the Tigers defeated No. 3 St. John's Prep 7-4 in the division quarterfinals and had a comeback 5-4 win against Billerica in the first round of the tournament. Their successful run all started with a 10-7 preliminary round victory over Lexington. Overall this season, the Tigers have moved to a record of 14-10. …

A number of Newton sports teams will be represented in the MIAA spring 2012 tournaments.
Newton will certainly be well represented in this year's Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) spring tournaments. Aside from Newton's ongoing victories at this year's outdoor track championships, nine other Newton sports teams will be heading to tournament play this spring. One of the first big matches will take place tonight between the Newton South boys' volleyball team and Barnstable, who will face off in a quarterfinal match for the South Div. 1 tournament. Last year, the second-seeded Tigers boys' volleyball beat out the fourth-seeded Lions for the South Div. 1 title. Below is a schedule of the upcoming tournament play. Both the Newton North and Newton South girls' and boys' track teams competed over the holiday weekend in the Eastern Div. 1 tournament.
Coming off of a standout indoor track season, the Newton North boys' and girls' outdoor track teams took home top honors at this weekend's Division 1 sectional tournament. Both Newton North teams beat out more than 30 other teams to finish first in Division 1 - East, with the Newton North boys scoring 64 points (19 points above second place Acton-Boxborough) and the girls taking home 95.5 points (33.5 points above the second place finishers, also Acton-Boxborough). The Newton South teams also competed in the tournament and snagged some top spots in various events. The boys' team finished eighth overall and the girls finished 24th overall. The Newton South High School girls' softball team defeated Lincoln-Sudbury 8-1 Wednesday, May 2 to advance to a 3-4 record. The girls will face Acton-Boxborough next on Monday, May 7.

Both the Newton North boys' and girls' indoor track teams finished in first place at the all-state meet.
Continuing their success from last week’s Div. 1 Championship meet, both the Newton North boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams took home first place in Sunday’s All-State Championship. The Newton North teams beat out fellow competitors from across the state to take the top honors in this year’s all-state meet, which was held at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Roxbury. Girls On the girls’ side, Junior Carla Forbes lead the team once again with a second place finish in the girls 55 meter dash and a first place finish in the long jump. Juniors Meghan Bellerose and Madison Nadeau, who managed top-10 finishes in other running events, also helped the Newton North girls take the title. Although they started this season determined for a championship title, the Lions lost 3-2 to Cambridge Rindge and Latin in a Central-East Div.1 first round tournament game.
CAMBRIDGE -- Four points away from a decisive game five victory, the Newton South girls volleyball team appeared to be in the driver’s seat Friday night to advance to the Div. 1 Central-East sectional quarterfinals. But those travel plans were canceled as the Lions let slip a six-point lead, losing the set 15-12 to Cambridge Rindge and Latin. The other scores were 16-25, 25-20, 21-25, and 25-18. “A little inconsistent coming down the end,” said Newton coach Todd Elwell. “Sometimes that pressure can be a little tough on you. But they also had to take it away from us. Not like we totally gave it to them. The Newton North boys and girls soccer teams as well as the Newton South boys soccer team enter the MIAA tournament.
Parents of Newton athletes are sure to be busy this fall as the post-season games begin to pile up. Soccer teams from both Newton North and Newton South have made it into this year's fall MIAA tournament, as the MIAA brackets were announced yesterday. Starting at Newton North, the 2010 North Div. 1 Champion boys soccer team managed to make it to the tournament this year with a #21 spot in the bracket and a record of 7-6-5. The Tigers will face rival Brookline (#12) tomorrow, Nov. 5, in a preliminary round game at 2:30 p.m. in Brookline. The low seed, though, isn't setback for the Newton North team. Both the Newton North and Newton South girls volleyball teams are heading to the MIAA tournament.
Doing as they have done for the last several years, both the Newton North and Newton South girls volleyball teams powered their way through the fall season and into the MIAA Central-East Div. 1 tournament. The Newton North team reached the top seed this year at 17-1. They will play a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Nov. 8 against the winner of a first round game between Madison Park and Somerville. The Newton North quarterfinal game will take place in Newton North's gym at 7 p.m. Newton South, who slid into the 10th seed with a 10-7 record, will face off against #7 Cambridge Rindge & Latin (14-4) tomorrow in a first round game at 7 p.m. in Cambridge.
