Newton Students Earn All-Scholastic Honors

The Boston Globe named student athletes to its fall All-Scholastic honors list

Three students from Newton South, Newton North and Newton Country Day School were named in this year's Boston Globe Fall All-Scholastic Honors.  Newton South freshman Rebecca Grusby was recognized for her work on the South girls' cross country team. According to the All-Scholastic write-ups in the Globe, Grusby started the season by sweeping the freshman course at the Frank Kelly Invitational. In addition, she won the Bob McIntyre Twilight meet, finished second in the Dual County Championship and Eastern Mass. Division 1 race and finished fifth in the Div. 1 All-State meet. Newton North senior Keane Brazda was honored as an All-Scholastic for her work on the girls' volleyball team. According to the Globe, Brazda had 300 assists and 250 …

Newton South Girls Volleyball Team Bows Out of Tournament

Although they started this season determined for a championship title, the Lions lost 3-2 to Cambridge Rindge and Latin in a Central-East Div.1 first round tournament game.

CAMBRIDGE -- Four points away from a decisive game five victory, the Newton South girls volleyball team appeared to be in the driver’s seat Friday night to advance to the Div. 1 Central-East sectional quarterfinals. But those travel plans were canceled as the Lions let slip a six-point lead, losing the set 15-12 to Cambridge Rindge and Latin. The other scores were 16-25, 25-20, 21-25, and 25-18.   “A little inconsistent coming down the end,” said Newton coach Todd Elwell. “Sometimes that pressure can be a little tough on you. But they also had to take it away from us. Not like we totally gave it to them. Lions Girls Volleyball Fall in Season Opener

Newton South loses to A-B, 3-0.

Having said goodbye to five starters from last year, the Newton South girls volleyball team said hello to a season opener of mental mistakes and miscommunication. The Lions, unable to find a grove throughout the match, fell 3-0 to Acton-Boxborough at Newton South High School Tuesday afternoon. The scores were 25-18, 25-19, and 25-21. “It’s always a problem when you graduate the majority of your seniors and you’re starting over a little bit,” said Lions coach Todd Elwell. “These kids worked extremely hard in the offseason, so it was kind of my expectation that they were going to come in and fill the shoes because every year you graduate seniors.” He added, “So we don’t want to make excuses for not being at a certain level.” For Colonials …
