The fundraiser is happening through May 12.
A cancer fundraiser involving sweet treats is now underway, and nearly a dozen Newton and Chestnut Hill businesses are taking part. Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer, in its 14th year, started Monday and runs through Sunday, May 12. Last year's event raised more than $78,000. Participating businesses create a special dessert to include on their menu, with proceeds from that dessert benefiting cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Bakes for Breast Cancer, Inc., a non-profit breast cancer organization. The businesses in Newton that are taking part:
The Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce held its annual 'Spring Seasonings' event on Monday, May 6. A sellout crowd packed the Newton Marriott to sample food from dozens of Newton and Needham restaurants.

The new shops will be moving into empty storefronts on Centre Street.
It looks as though Newton is about to get another dose of "FroYo." The Irvine, Calif.-based Yogurtland will soon open a location at 1231 Centre St. in Newton Centre. Although the Yogurtland website does not list its new Newton location, part of the storefront at 1231 Centre St. is covered in a large Yogurtland poster confirming the arrival of the self-serve frozen yogurt shop. Yogurtland announced late last year its plans to open 20 new locations in the Boston area. According to the Newton Board of License Commissioners' April 16, 2013 agenda, Yogurtland plans to be open Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. This will be the second frozen yogurt shop in Newton Centre and the fourth in the city, joining …

Treat Cupcake Bar is giving proceeds from special "Boston Strong" cupcake to The One Fund.
Treat yourself to a tasty pastry that benefits The One Fund. Treat Cupcake Bar is selling a special "B Strong" cupcake, from which 50 percent of the proceeds will benefit The One Fund, a charity that helps the victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing. The cupcake costs $5, and is available at both the Needham and Chestnut Hill cupcake bars until the end of May. According to an e-mail from Treat, The One Fund was selected as part of the Treat Others Well program, which aims to help Greater Boston- and Needham-area youth spread word about their programs and charities each month. The One Fund was selected as this month's chosen non-profit. Previously, Treat Others Well has sold cupcakes to benefit the Needham Education Foundation …

Popular Chinese restaurant Bernard's has reopened at THE STREET in Chestnut Hill. Patch spoke to General Manager Allan Lam and bartender Tim Tighe about what makes the restaurant such a local hotspot.
When Bernard’s closed its doors at the Mall at Chestnut Hill, a nearly audible cry of dismay arose from around Newton and Chestnut Hill. Longtime patrons of the popular Chinese restaurant wondered where they would dine locally for their favorite Asian dishes. During Patch's interview earlier this week, a customer came in to the restaurant (which had not yet opened for the day) and spoke to the gentleman manning the front desk. “So, are you really open now?” she inquired. When this was confirmed, she continued, “I’m so glad! When I went to the Mall (at Chestnut Hill) and saw that you had closed, my heart just sank. But then I saw the big red sign out front here, and I came in to make sure it was true. I am so glad you are back!” And they …

The "gourmet Asian" restaurant was previously located in the Mall at Chestnut Hill.
Months after the popular Bernard's restaurant closed at the Mall at Chestnut Hill, the "gourmet Asian" eatery has finally reopened next door at The Street. The restaurant opened Tuesday, April 16, according to The Street Facebook page and website. It is located in the new building recently constructed at 55 Boylston St., next to the new City Sports and below Sports Club/LA. Bernard's closed its location at the Mall at Chestnut Hill in early 2013 as it prepared to relocate to The Street. Meanwhile, the Mall announced in February that a new Tokyo Japanese Steak House would fill the space vacated by Bernard's. According to The Street's website, Bernard's offers Asian cuisine with "only the freshest ingredients and the finest aromatic spices…

The chain currently operates nine studios in Massachusetts.
The owners of Plaster Fun Time announced this week they are seeking a buyer or investor for the nine-store chain. The plaster studio, which has a location on Needham Street in Newton, allows patrons to paint pre-made plaster items, such as banks, plates, figurines and teapots. The locations are popular with camps, scout troops and birthday parties. In a press release issued this week, the Plaster Fun Time owners said they are looking to extend their chain nationally and internationally. For the full press release, check out the .pdf section to the right.
