Newton Celebrates World Cultures with Heritage Festival Series [Video]

Mayor Setti Warren and Director of the Mayor's Office for Cultural Affairs Linda Plaut kicked off a new series of Newton Heritage Festivals at a press conference Friday afternoon.

It all started last spring with a Russian cultural festival that was so successful, the local Indian community wanted to replicate the celebration. Then came the idea for a Chinese cultural festival, a French festival and before too long, Newton had a full schedule of cultural celebrations lined up for the months of March and April.  "We're here to announce the Newton Heritage Festivals, which bring together private sector companies, restaurants and entities that have been working and partnering with Newton for many years...so we can promote commerce, culture and the arts as well as promote the diversity Newton has to offer," Mayor Setti Warren said at a kick-off press conference Friday, Feb. 22. New Philharmonia Orchestra Kicks of 18th Season in Newton [PHOTOS]

The orchestra will hold a special gala fundraiser this Saturday, Oct. 13, at Gregorian Rugs.

The 2012 opening night for Newton's New Philharmonia Orchestra will include mystery, intrigue and -- that's right -- murder. There will also be a bit of humor and, of course, music. The local orchestra, which turns 18 this season, will be holding its Opening Night at the Symphony Gala Fundraiser this Saturday, Oct. 13, at Gregorian Rugs in Newton Lower Falls. The evening will include a performance of Nathaniel Stookey's "The Composer is Dead," a piece written for orchestra that is coupled with narration based on a book by Lemony Snicket.  "It's a very entertaining piece," says NPO Music Director Ronald Knudsen.  The piece, which will feature narration by Boston-area actor Jake Berger, features an inspector trying to find the guilty party …

VIDEO: Business, Culture and International Diplomacy at Newton City Hall

Mayor Setti Warren brought together a number of community business and cultural leaders to meet and greet with diplomats from more than 30 nations. The evening was accompanied by Newton Open Studios artwork and live music courtesy of the Suzuki School.

The following is a press release from Mayor Setti Warren's office: In an effort to promote what a wonderful city we live and work in, tonight Mayor Warren hosted diplomats from the region to join a reception that served to connect them with local businesses and many local artists and contributors to cultural life. Diplomats from over 30 nations were in attendance for the event, which was co-sponsored by the City of Newton and Newton Community Pride. The reception featured dozens of local businesses, a variety of local artwork provided by Newton Open Studios, and live music courtesy of the Suzuki School.
