Newton School Committee Approves Design for F.A. Day Work

The design will now go to the Design Review Committee for consideration.

The Newton School Committee last night approved initial designs for additions and renovations to the crowded F.A. Day Middle School.  Although the plans are only at 50 percent design, they will now move forward to the city's Design Review Committee, who will take a look at the plans and offer suggestions during a meeting on Thursday. Next week, the design and proposal for $643,500 in design costs will move on to Board of Aldermen subcommittees.  Deputy Superintendent/Chief Administrative Officer Sandy Guryan reiterated the point that the $4.3-$4.8 million estimated cost for the project could potentially change after design is finished and bids come in to the city.  "We won’t know the final cost until we complete the design and reach the …

Aldermen Share Concerns About Funding for Facilities Projects

The School Committee provided updates on short- and long-term facilities projects in the Newton Public Schools.

During a joint meeting Thursday night between the Board of Aldermen and School Committee, the topic of funding sources for facilities work was a common theme throughout the evening.  With only $5 million set aside for the short-term facilities improvements at F.A. Day Middle School and three elementary schools, some aldermen shared concerns last night that the projects could come in over-budget without a source for the extra costs.
