5 Things You Missed at the Board of Aldermen: Upper Falls Greenway Land, Mall Renovation Approved

Aldermen also honored a number of community members during the Dec. 17 meeting, including the Newton North girls' volleyball team.

  1. Lease approved for Upper Falls Greenway land Following approval from the board's Programs & Services, Finance and Public Facilities committees, the full Board of Aldermen unanimously approved Monday night an item that would allow the city to enter into a 99-year lease with the MBTA for just under a mile of unused rail bed running parallel to Needham Street.  This vote will help pave the way for the Upper Falls Greenway, a proposed bike and recreational path that runs along the railbed from National Lumber down to a scenic overlook of the Charles River. Five Things You Missed at the March 19 Board of Aldermen Meeting

Did you catch the meeting on NewTV? In case you missed it, here are some highlights from the evening.

1. The Board of Aldermen offered a memorial resolution for Sam Glass, a well-known Democratic activist in Newton who recently passed away at the age of 89. Glass, who moved to the United States from Romania in 1931, served in World War II and was an active member of the Newton Democratic City Committee. Many members of the community, including Glass' friends, family and former Mayor Tom Concannon, were on hand to witness the memorial resolution. Aldermen Approve Designs for F.A. Day Project

The F.A. Day Middle School project looks to add six classrooms, expand the cafeteria and revamp administrative areas.

At its last meeting for the term and the year, the Newton Board of Aldermen last night approved designs for an expansion and renovation project at F.A. Day Middle School.  The designs, which have been approved by the Design Review and Public Facilities Committees, plan to add on six classrooms, expand the school cafeteria, revamp administrative areas and rebuild the school's west entrance.  In addition, the board gave its OK to appropriate $643,500 for the design work and "other related expenses" for the renovations at F.A. Day Middle School.  The design funding was previously approved by the Public Facilities Committee (6-0-1 in favor), Programs and Services Committee (6-0 in favor) as well as the Finance Committee (7-0-1) in favor.  …

Board Bids Farewell to Departing Aldermen

The board said goodbye to Charlie Shapiro, John Freedman and Sydra Schnipper.

As another term comes to an end, the Newton Board of Aldermen honored its outgoing members last night, allowing them each to preside over the board and share a few words with their colleagues.  Ward 6 Alderman-at-Large Charlie Shapiro, Ward 8 Alderman-at-Large John Freedman and Ward 7 Alderman-at-Large Sydra Schnipper all had a chance to stand at the podium as "acting president" for a few moments of the meeting.  "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve four years as an alderman in the city of Newton," said Freedman, who decided not to run in this year's election.  With Freedman stepping down, the three-way race for the two Ward 8 at-large seats came down between David Kalis, Tom Sheff and incumbent Mitchell Fischmann. Kalis and …
