All elementary and middle schools will receive the systems as well as the Education Center.
Updated 11:30 a.m. The installation of new security systems at Newton's elementary and middle schools is likely to begin sometime this week, according to Newton school officials. During last week's School Committee meeting, Deputy Superintendent/Chief Administrative Officer Sandy Guryan updated the committee members on the security systems, noting that the project will likely take 6-8 weeks to complete. The systems will be installed in all 15 of Newton's elementary schools as well as all four middle schools and the Education Center, where a preschool is located. Overall, school officials said the project will total just over $560,000. According to Guryan, $346,000 of the total cost will be put toward the actual security systems and …

Superintendent David Fleishman says he and the administration are moving "as quickly as we can" on the security upgrades.
New buzzer and camera security systems will soon be making their way to Newton elementary and middle schools. Superintendent David Fleishman told Newton Patch this week the new systems should be installed by the end of April. "We're moving as quickly as we can," Fleishman said. The systems will be installed in 14 of the district's elementary schools, all four middle schools and the Education Center (where a preschool is located), Fleishman said. The district already installed a security buzzer system at Lincoln-Eliot Elementary last year, Fleishman clarified. The entire project will total just over $560,000, Fleishman said, which includes costs for cameras, buzzers and keyless entries at the schools and Education Center as well as …

Newton Public School administrators also offered updates on the various facilities projects happening around the district, including expansion at F.A. Day Middle School and proposed modular classrooms.
During Monday night's School Committee meeting, committee members voted in favor of a plan that would send all students from Cabot Elementary to F.A. Day Middle School, rather than splitting students between F.A. Day and Bigelow Middle when they reach sixth grade. Here are five other things you may have missed from the meeting: 1. A busy season for principal searches During his update for the School Committee, Superintendent David Fleishman informed the committee that the district is taking on a third principal search this season, as Countryside Elementary Principal Emily Ostrower announced last week she plans to retire at the end of this school year. Ostrower has been at Countryside for a decade, Fleishman said, and has hired much of …

With the new system, the front doors of the K-8 schools to be locked during the school day, through dismissal.
In the wake of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, Newton school and city officials have assessed the district's safety measures and decided to install buzzer and camera entry systems at all Newton elementary and middle schools. The new buzzer systems will allow the K-8 schools to remain locked during the day through dismissal, according to a letter sent to the school community Friday afternoon by Superintendent David Fleishman. "We must continue to improve our safety practices and procedures in a thoughtful manner," Fleishman said in the letter. "There are sensible security measures that we can implement while preserving the sense of community that is a hallmark of the Newton Public Schools." As explained in an …
