Snow Emergency Lifted in Newton as of 1:30 p.m.

Cars can now park on the streets and in municipal lots.

The snow emergency and parking ban has been lifted in Newton, effective 1:30 p.m., according to the mayor's office.  With the snow emergency lifted, cars can be parked on city streets and in municipal lots again.  However, the city's regular winter parking ban remains in effect. With this ban, cars are not allowed to park on city streets for more than one hour between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. This parking ban runs from November 15-April 15.  Newton issued the snow emergency early Tuesday morning as a late winter snow storm made its way through the state. Newton Snow Emergency Starts Friday at Noon

All cars must be removed from city streets and municipal lots by noontime Friday.

A snow emergency will go into effect in Newton as of noon on Friday, Feb. 8, according to a press release issued by the city Thursday evening.  During a snow emergency, all cars must be parked off city streets and out of municipal parking lots. Cars left on the street or in municipal lots will be ticketed and towed. All Newton Public Schools will be closed Friday, Feb. 8. Newton City Hall and the Newton Free Library will close at noon. The Newton Senior Center will be closed all day. Despite the snow emergency, trash and recycling pickup will continue as scheduled on Friday, according to city officials.  According to the National Weather Service, Friday's storm is forecasted to dump as much as two feet of snow on the Newton area. UPDATED: Snow Emergency in Effect in Newton as of 11 p.m.

All cars must be parked off the street.

Updated 10:30 p.m. As of 11 p.m., a snow emergency will be in effect in Newton, according to a Tweet from the Newton Police Department. Earlier, Newton Patch reported a Newton Police Tweet that indicated the snow emergency would start at 8 p.m. However, the time was changed to 11 p.m.  During a snow emergency all cars must be parked off the street to allow for plows and proper snow clearing. Vehicle owners who violate the snow emergency by parking on city streets will be ticketed and towed.  In addition, residents should remember the city's trial snow shoveling ordinance, which requires homeowners to clear sidewalks outside their homes within 30 hours of a storm.  If residents have any snow-related service requests for the city, they can …
