PHOTOS: Turning on the Holiday Spirit in Newton's Villages

Waban Square and Coletti-Magni Park were packed Sunday evening as community members gathered to kick off the holiday season in Newton's villages.  The festivities started in Waban with the annual tree lighting and community sing-a-long. The huge tree in Waban Square (corner of Woodward Street and Beacon Street) is now adorned with bright blue and gold lights. Later Sunday evening, the Nonantum Children's Christmas Party Association kicked off its annual holiday event in Coletti-Magni Park. The block around the park was packed with hundreds of people as Santa made his way down Watertown Street, escorted by a truck from the Newton Fire Department.  After Santa made it into the park, the countdown began. Annual Tree Lighting Events Sunday in Nonantum, Waban

Newton will start to show its holiday spirit this weekend with annual tree lighting events in Nonantum and Waban. The village of Waban will kick off the festivities on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. in Waban Square (near the intersection of Beacon Street and Woodward Street). The Waban holiday event will include the annual tree lighting as well as a community sing-a-long.  Also on Sunday evening, the Nonantum Children’s Christmas Party Association will present the annual tree lighting at Coletti-Magni Park on Watertown Street in Nonantum.  Nonantum's tree lighting event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include an appearance from Santa Claus himself. The Holiday Spirit Comes to Newton's Villages this Weekend

Get in the holiday spirit this weekend with tree lighting ceremonies and a holiday craft fair.

The spirit of Christmas will fill the streets this weekend with tree lighting ceremonies in Waban and Nonantum, and the annual Celebrate Newton Holiday Craft Fair returns to Newton South High School. The Waban Winter Fun Tree Lighting and Sing-Along will take place in Waban Center at the corner of Beacon and Woodward streets on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The tree lighting is a tradition that has been going on for over 20 years in Waban, says Theresa Fitzpatrick, chair of the Waban Improvement Society. This year, a sing-along of seasonal songs will be led by the Newton Family Singers as the tree is lit, she says.  With Wyman Street closed off for the event, they will be giving out cookies and hot chocolate donated by Starbucks.  They will also be …
