How Should Newton Reuse the former Parks & Recreation Site on Crescent Street?

The building and land is located at 70 Crescent St. in Auburndale.

It has been just over a year since the Newton Parks & Recreation Department officially moved in to its new home on Vernon Street in Newton Corner, leaving behind its former residence at 70 Crescent St. Now, the city is considering the reuse of the Auburndale property, which was declared as surplus by Parks & Recreation Commissioner Robert DeRubeis in October 2011. Similar to the former Health Department building and Austin Street parking lot, the city formed a joint advisory planning group (JAPG) to study the Crescent Street site and propose possible uses for the property.  The current site includes a three-story building that is approximately 3,200 square feet. Parks & Recreation Dept. Settles in at New Location

After 41 years at its 70 Crescent St. location, the Parks & Recreation Department has finally settled in at its new location in Newton Corner.  The new office is located at the Chaffin Estate (also known as the former Newton Corner Library) at 124 Vernon St. The department relocated there January 3-4.  Following the move, Parks & Recreation Department Commissioner Robert DeRubeis sent a letter last week to the department's former neighbors on Crescent Street, thanking them for their "hospitality" over the last four decades.  "Your hospitality always made us feel welcome; we will surely miss our friends and neighbors in Auburndale," DeRubeis says in his letter.  To read DeRubeis' full letter, click the .pdf to the right.
