Robbery on Needham Street Police responded to Needham Street for a report of a robbery that reportedly occurred outside Boston Ski and Tennis on Friday, May 17. The victim said someone stole money from her and then ran behind buildings. The thief was described as a Hispanic male, about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with a light scruffy beard. He was wearing a red and black puffy jacket, baggy jean shorts, a white T-shirt and black sneakers, according to the victim. Probation violation A Newton woman was arrested on March 24 for an alleged probation violation, reports said. Beth M. Dunton, 44, of 29 Middle St., was arrested for a probation violation warrant out of Newton District Court, police said. Tagging Newton Police responded to the Elks Lodge in Newton Corner (Centre Street) on March 24 after someone reported vandalism at the lodge and the former convenience store (Newton Corner Mart). Good Thing the Dog Needed to Go Out A Wayland dog walker arrived at her client's Main Street home Monday, March 18, to find a strange pickup truck in the driveway and an unknown man in the client's home. Police say the dog walker spoke with the man, assuming he was supposed to be there, but also aware that he was "trying to get her out of the house quickly," police said. That afternoon the homeowner discovered that a water jug containing $500 or more of loose change was missing and two basement windows had been broken. Shoplifting incident A Virginia woman was arrested by Newton Police on March 12 after she allegedly stole from the Whole Foods on Washington Street. According to reports, the woman concealed several cosmetic and food items in her bag. When police arrived on scene, they found her hiding behind a tree. Ungodlike Behavior Waltham Police arrested a 61-year-old Medford woman for allegedly stealing an iPhone from a 12-year-old girl in during church services in Arlington last weekend. The girl told police she left her belongings, including her phone, in the back room of St. Camillus Church during the 9 a.m. service in which she was an alter server. This is the second scam of this nature reported to Newton Police in the last week.
A new phone scam seems to have hit the area. Newton Police have responded to two incidents in the last week where callers have contacted women and demanded money for their husbands, who are reportedly being held hostage by the caller. On Saturday, March 9, Newton Police responded to a home after a woman reported a suspicious phone call she had received around 11 a.m. that day. According to reports, the caller claimed the woman's husband was injured in an accident that also involved the caller. The caller told the woman he was holding her husband captive until she wired money to pay for damages from the accident, reports said. Break-in on North Street Newton Police responded to a home on North Street on March 4 for reports of a breaking and entering. According to reports, the resident left her home around 10 a.m. and returned just before 1 p.m. to find her home had been entered. Police searched the home for a suspect, but did not find anyone. The entire home was ransacked, police said, but the only item reported missing at the time was a Mac laptop.
