Millions of people will head towards the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 21 to witness President Barack Obama take the oath of office for his second term. On Jan. 20, 2009, Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. The theme for his first inauguration was “A New Birth of Freedom.” The ceremony honored the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. This year, the theme is “Faith in America's Future,” honoring the installation of the Statue of Freedom on the Capitol Dome 150 years ago in 1863. This year's inauguration will also commemorate Martin Luther King Jr., as Jan. 21 is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Pres. Obama's candidate for Secretary of State has withdrawn her bid to be top diplomat. Does that mean Mass. Sen. John Kerry is next up for consideration?
President Obama said this week that U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice had withdrawn from consideration to be the next Secretary of State, saying conservative opposition would make her candidacy too "disruptive." With Rice out of the picture, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is seen by many to be the frontrunner to replace current top diplomat Hillary Clinton. On Huffington Post and elsewhere, there has been speculation that the reason for such fierce opposition to Rice was to get Kerry into the Obama Administration and get back the U.S. Senate seat recently lost by Republican Sen. President Barack Obama is scheduled to hobnob with big-money donors in the South End today, and then attend an event at Symphony Hall. Obama was scheduled for a campaign roundtable Monday morning at Hammersley's Bistro in the South End. He and also spoke at Symphony Hall in the afternoon, a Boston Globe article says. Later in the day, Judith and Douglas Krupp of Weston host a "Dinner with President Obama," according to Weston Patch. Tickets are $17,900, or $35,800 for a couple. While the dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., the president's arrival will not be until later, Weston police said, and likely will not disrupt the evening commute.
