Pedestrian Killed on Route 128 in Newton Identified as Malden Resident

The teen worked at the Honey Dew Donuts in the Newton rest area.

State Police: 18-Year-Old Killed While Crossing Route 128 in Newton

State Police release new details in the crash this morning, which caused a backup in traffic along Rte. 128.

Updated 5:12 p.m. State Police have identified the victim killed this morning on Route 128 in Newton. 4:53 p.m. WCVB is reporting this afternoon that the teen who was struck on Route 128 worked at the Honey Dew Donuts at the Newton rest stop.  The accident happened near the rest stop, just north of exit 21. It initially reported the teen worked at McDonald's. However, the story has been corrected with the information that he worked at Honey Dew Donuts. The owner-operator of the shop told WCVB the teen had only been working at the fast-food restaurant for a short time.  1:45 p.m. The pedestrian struck and killed on Route 128 in Newton this morning was an 18-year-old man attempting to cross the highway on foot, State Police said this …

I guess he thought that at 6:30 am the traffic was light enough to be able to make it across without using the bridge. And I guess the cars had no reason to guess they needed to be looking out for pedestrians crossing. Also it was very cold at that time. He should have taken the Grove Street bridge, or the Washington Street bridge.   more ›

UPDATED: Pedestrian Struck, Killed on Route 128 in Newton

The incident happened near the rest area, between Grove Street and Route 16.

Updated 2 p.m. State Police issued a press release this afternoon with more details on the accident and the pedestrian struck this morning.  10 a.m. The MassDOT Twitter account posted an update at 9:50 a.m. stating that the scene on Route 128 has been cleared and all lanes are open. However, drivers should expect residual traffic delays. According to Google Maps traffic, the southbound lanes on Route 128 are still at a standstill from Burlington (Route 3) to Newton. Thursday mornng was SO cold, It was about 4 degrees fahrenheit. Perhaps that had something to do with him trying to cross directly instead of going by the bridge. It may also have had something to do with not fully seeing oncoming cars, or not being able to scoot out of the way as quickly as he might if it weren't so cold and maybe dressed lighter.   more ›
