The problem is that job of the Solicitor entails a biased view of the law when advocating for City Hall. When that position is used in a mediator-type role such as with the Election Comm, the person must change hats and be unbiased, That clearly did not happen here. She wrote an EC ruling that was purely fiction -- very few of the points were discussed during the EC hearing, as we know.   more ›

Week in Review: Shoveling, School Budget and Hope for Spring

Miss something this week in Newton? Here's a roundup of the week's top headlines.

The week started off with a big decision from the Board of Aldermen on the snow shoveling ordinance. In an 18-6 vote Monday night, the full Board decided to start a two-year "trial" of the ordinance on Nov. 1, 2011. The trial will not include any fines for not shoveling and will have exemptions for those residents who cannot shovel due to physical or financial hardship. In addition to the snow shoveling ordinance, aldermen also voted Monday night to send a debt exclusion discussion back to the Finance Committee and to approve of a Joint Advisory Planning Group that will consider development options for the Austin Street municipal lot.  The same night, the School Committee discussed significant increases to the fees for sports and …

New Options on the Table for School Expansion

With added sprinkler costs, the department will have to reassess its options.

With mandated sprinkler systems adding a potential $2.3 to $2.8 million to school building expansion plans, the School Committee last night considered a series of new options for creating space at F.A. Day Middle School and several elementary schools.  Deputy Superintendent and Chief Administrative Officer Sandy Guryan outlined four potential plans last night, including options that could limit the expansion at F.A. Day and/or the number of modular classrooms installed at crowded elementary schools. To view the four new options for expansion, check out our photos and .pdf section. With a significant increase in the district's enrollment, the School Committee in November approved a $5 million package for expansion at several schools, …

I find it incomprehensible that EVERY ONE of these options meets OR EXCEEDS the $5M cap set by Mayor Warren to cover space needs for the next FIVE YEARS. I see no contingency reserve. I see no reserve for the four years beyond next year. It is obvious that the mentality of now, now, now and more, more, more and bail-us-out-later-because-its-for-the-kids is alive and well at the Ed Center and on …   more ›

Schools: Principal Search Underway, Bullying Policy Approved

Lots of ground was covered at Monday night's School Committee meeting.

The search for new principals at Lincoln-Eliot and Underwood Elementary Schools is underway, Superintendent David Fleishman reported earlier this week. "Over the next few months, we're going to work really hard to find the best principals for these two communities," Fleishman said. Last week, Fleishman said members of the administration met with faculty, staff and parents at the two elementary schools to discuss the search process. The positions, which are now officially advertised, would replace Interim Principal Greg Hurray at Lincoln-Eliot and retiring Underwood Principal Dr. David Castelline.   Revamped bullying policy and procedure approved Following last month's presentation on a new district-wide bullying policy and procedure, …

Elementary Modulars Pass Another Step

Public Facilities and Programs & Services gave their stamp of approval for $75,000 in site plan design.

As the district continues to burst at the seams with students, the Board of Aldermen's Public Facilities and Programs & Services Subcommittees last night gave their approval of $75,000 to fund site plan design work for potential modulars at five elementary schools. The funds would look into sites at Zervas, Horace Mann, Countryside and, as later amended, Burr and Mason-Rice Elementary Schools. The item will now move to the Finance Committee, which will meet on Monday.  Up to six modular classrooms were recommended last month by the School Committee as well as permanent construction to build out the space-strained F.A. Day Middle School.  The committee plans for the work to come together as part of a $5 million package in…

District Will Have its Own Bullying Prevention Website

The new site is just one piece to a revamped bullying policy.

It's a movement and a concern that has rapidly spread across the state in the last year: bullying--what it is and how to deal with it. And while Newton is lauded for its top-ranked education, its impressive facilities and rigorous program of studies, a problem like bullying still looms in the back of the minds of parents, teachers, administrators and students. Last night, Deputy Superintendent Paul Stein met with the School Committee to present a draft policy for bullying prevention and intervention. The guidelines, which include plans for a district bullying website, will revamp the district's current bullying protocol. The policy, Stein said, is the result of the hard work of a task force made up of school officials, parents, students …

School Committee Approves Recommendation to Expand Middle School

Recommendation says renovations should be made to middle school and up to six modulars at the elementary schools.

The School Committee tonight voted unanimously to accept the recommendation from administration to expand facilities at F.A. Day Middle School and purchase up to six modulars for the elementary schools. The language of the recommendation was a crucial piece to the vote--as committee members noted they did not want to commit to a particular construction plan at Day and the possibility that all the recommended modulars may be the best option for particular elementary schools.  "My opinion has absolutely evolved from where we started," said committee member Matt Hills. "The need is shown in absolute excess." Committee members also emphasized the importance of staying under the $5 million the city has said it will bond for the projects. "I …
