State of the City: Newton Mayor Stresses 'Critical Decision' in Override Vote

Mayor Setti Warren gave the annual State of the City address Monday night at Newton City Hall.

With just over a month to go before Newton voters decide on an $11.4 million override package, Mayor Setti Warren underlined in his State of the City address Monday night the "critical" choice residents face in deciding whether to support the proposed tax levy measure. "This is the most important State of the City [address] that I've given since becoming mayor," Warren said in an interview with Newton Patch Monday afternoon. "We have a critical choice in front of us as a community."  Residents will head to the polls on March 12 to vote on three override questions that aim to improve infrastructure, boost public safety and help crowded classrooms. The override package will provide funding for additional police officers, a new fire …

Only 50c per $1000 valuation of your home... Wow, that's peanuts! So according to the financial wizards at Newton City Hall, thats a median override cost to earch taxpayer of $343/year! Well, what if you invested this mere $343 in a high-quality diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds at an expected 12% annual rate of return you would have over $82,000 in 30 years. That's WITHOUT Compounding (…   more ›

Newton Mayor Joins Massachusetts Delegation of Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Since the Newtown school tragedy, 14 Massachusetts mayors have joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino hosted the Massachusetts delegation of the  Mayor's Against Illegal Guns coalition today as they continued their push on Congress to enact national legislation that will decrease gun violence. “Earlier this week, I asked the City of Boston to stand with us on guns and say enough is enough,” said Menino at the Parkman House on Beacon Street. “As Mayors, we have a responsibility to our residents to do all we can to make our neighborhoods safer. Today, we’re calling on every community in Massachusetts to stand with us. We must keep the pressure on Congress to take swift action.” Menino praised the Massachusetts federal delegation for signing onto the Fix Guns Check Act, which would require background checks for …

I'd like to see Setti Warren take a stand against police brutality. Because there is at least one officer on the Newton Police Force who should rightly be called a member of the Newton Police Excessive Force. The mayor and the police of Newton are lucky that I have no prior history of broken bones or fractures in my right arm or wrist, because the officer who twisted my right arm excessively in …   more ›

Setti Warren Attends Obama Office Opening in NH

The mayor helped open the Obama campaign's Salem, N.H., office Sunday.

Mayor Setti Warren was in Salem, N.H., Sunday, July 15, to help open the Obama campaign's new office. While he was there, Warren took a few shots at Obama's opponent, Mitt Romney. "I'm here today because there is a very clear choice in this election," he said. "Are we going to move forward with President Obama and build an economy that will last, where we invest in education, innovation and infrastructure, or will we move backwards with Mitt Romney and return to the failed policies of the past? "As for Mitt Romney – we've seen this movie before. We watched it for eight years with George Bush. We now where Mitt Romney's policies will lead this country: backwards." The new Salem Organizing for America – New Hampshire campaign office is …

With a little encouragement from the mayor and a drive to try new communication tools, several City Hall departments are turning to social media to deliver information.

Residents can now get those updates in 140 characters or less.  In an effort to be more transparent and communicative with Newton residents, Mayor Setti Warren has encouraged several City Hall departments to establish their own voices through social media and other communication tools.  "When I came into office I saw a need for department heads to get to another level to communicate with our residents as efficiently as possible," says Warren, who uses both Twitter and Facebook to connect with the community.  Warren says residents frequently interact with him on Twitter, especially during weather emergencies. He says he pushes information out on his social networks to show the …
