Conroy Bows Out of U.S. Senate Race

Tom Conroy will not be running for a U.S. Senate seat in 2012, leaving four candidates left in the primary, including Newton resident Herb Robinson.

Tom Conroy officially announced his withdrawal from the 2012 U.S. Senate campaign Monday and, subsequently, his intention to run for a fourth term in the Massachusetts house. “It’s the right thing to do for me, for my family, for the people of the 13th Middlesex District,” Conroy said in a phone call with Patch. Conroy, a Democrat from Wayland, entered the 2012 Senate Democratic primary race in June and soon thereafter launched a 650-mile walk throughout the Commonwealth geared toward meeting constituents and talking through issues. With Conroy's exit, contenders remaining in the Democratic primary race include Herb Robinson, a Newton resident; Marisa DeFranco, a North Shore lawyer; James C. King, a lawyer; and former Harvard Law professor…

Report: Tom Conroy Plans to Exit Senate Race

According to reports from Boston.com, Conroy is expected to make the announcement later today.

Boston.com is reporting Tom Conroy (D-Wayland) will announce his decision to drop out of the 2012 Massachusetts Senate race this morning. A press release from Conroy's camp said the third-term representative will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. outside the main entrance of the State House on Beacon Street. Boston.com reports that Conroy cited Elizabeth Warren's name recognition and fundraising ability as reasons behind his decision to discontinue his bid. Warren is currently leading in the Democratic polls. North Shore lawyer Marisa DeFranco, Newton resident Herb Robinson and Dover lawyer James C. King remain in the Senate Democratic primary race now that Conroy, Newton mayor Setti Warren, Somerville resident and activist Bob Massie…

Tom Conroy Undeterred by 'Rock Star' Rival Elizabeth Warren

Underdog Democrat tells Newton Democrats why he should be the candidate to challenge Scott Brown for Massachusetts' U.S. Senate seat.

State Rep. Tom Conroy barely registers in polling of which candidates voters prefer for their U.S. Senator. But only hours after a Vanity Fair magazine profile of rival Democrat Elizabeth Warren hit the Web, and only days after she reported an astonishing $3.15 million fund-raising debut, Conroy was meeting with the Newton Democratic City Committee. Yes, the turnout was sparse Wednesday night, the latest in a series of meet-and-greets with potential candidates hoping to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown. So Conroy was wise to immediately address what he called 'the elephant in the room:' Warren's dominance of the race since she announced her candidacy less than a month ago. "I'm not at the top of the polls," Conroy said. He readily …

U.S. Senate Candidate Tom Conroy Meets with Newton Dems Tonight

Conroy, a state representative from Wayland, will speak at the Auburndale Community Library.

U.S. Senate Candidate and State Representative Tom Conroy will meet with the Newton Democratic City Committee tonight at the Auburndale Community Library, 375 Auburn St. Conroy, who is the state representative from Wayland, made a stop in Newton back in August as part of his walking campaign across the state. During his time in The Garden City, Conroy argued that his legislative and business experience make him the candidate of choice to beat Scott Brown. Over the summer, Conroy and his campaign walked more than 650 miles across the Commonwealth to reach out to voters. Recently, Conroy's camp spoke with Patch about the changes in the race, including the addition of Elizabeth Warren and Mayor Setti Warren's decision to drop out.  The "…

Tom Conroy's Camp Reacts to Changing Senate Race

With Setti Warren's withdraw, Rep. Tom Conroy (D-Wayland) is now one of six Democratic candidates challenging Scott Brown for his Senate seat.

Rep. Tom Conroy (D-Wayland) is optimistically focused on moving forward in his 2012 Senate campaign even as another Democratic candidate, Setti Warren, withdraws his candidacy. Jon Saxton, Conroy’s campaign manager, expressed respect for Warren and his campaign, saying they found Warren to be a worthy Democratic candidate who would have made an excellent senator, but the Conroy camp was not necessarily shocked at Warren’s decision. “I’ve said all along that when Elizabeth Warren got into the race, it would help our campaign,” said Jon Saxton, Conroy’s campaign manager. “When she comes in, she overshadows [Alan] Khazei, [Setti] Warren. I truly feel like those folks don’t have anywhere to go anymore; whereas Tom Conroy is distinct from …

A Glimpse at U.S. Senate Candidate Campaign Finances

A look at candidates who hope to challenge U.S. Sen. Scott Brown — and how much money they've raised so far.

With speculation this week about whether Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren might join the race to become Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 2012, Patch decided to check in on the candidates who have already declared their interest in unseating Scott Brown. Although the primary is more than a year away, a bevy of at least six candidates has been campaigning hard. But will the door-to-door, town-to-town campaigning actually work and bring back Brown's seat to the Democrats? Some of the candidates say they have the start they need to do just that. "We believe this is a strong start for a first-time statewide candidate," said Setti Warren's press secretary Chuck Gilboy. He said the Newton mayor has raised more than $122,000 since …

Video: Newton Mayor Speaks to Framingham Democratic Town Committee

Newton Mayor Setti Warren and State Rep. Tom Conroy spoke about why they should replace U.S. Senator Scott Brown at a meeting of the Framingham Democratic Town Committee.

The Framingham Democratic Town Committee hosted two candidates that hope to take over U.S. Senator Scott Brown's seat in Nov. 2012. Newton Mayor Setti Warren and State Rep. Tom Conroy, who represents Lincoln, Wayland and Sudbury, spoke to a small crowd of democrats from Framingham Sunday night. One of the biggest issues for both Warren and Conroy is job creation. With a 9 percent unemployment rate, the voters are desperately seeking a candidate who can provide a plan to boost the economy. Attendees also wanted to know about the candidates’ health care plans, as well as their policy for accepting corporate donations. In terms of health care, several committee members voiced that they wanted a single-payer system, where the government would …
