Trader Joe's Recalls Frozen Chicken and Rice Meal

The grocer has voluntarily recalled 240 cartons of a frozen chicken and rice meal due to possible listeria contamination.

Trader Joe's has voluntarily recalled a batch of one of its frozen chicken and rice meals from store shelves in 14 states, including Massachusetts, due to possible listeria contamination. The neighborhood grocer announced over the weekend it was alerted by its supplier that some Trader Joe's Butter Chicken with Basmati Rice meals may be affected. The products in question are: sku 99032 with a production date of "305 12" and come in 12.5-ounce packages. "In accordance with our stringent health and safety standards, and out of the utmost caution and care for our customers, all code dates of this product have been removed from sale and destroyed. Trader Joe’s Recalls Peanut Butter Over Salmonella Concerns

Company has removed house brand off the shelves and offered refunds to customers.

Trader Joe’s corporate officials say they are acting “out of an abundance of caution” and ordering the recall of one type of its house brand peanut butter over salmonella concerns. “Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” should not be eaten, the specialty grocery chain said. “We have no confirmed information that suggests this peanut butter is unsafe to eat,” the company stated. But the food should not be eaten “pending health-related inquiries.” The Food and Drug Administration posted the company’s voluntary recall on its web site, but did not comment on the company’s statement. Change to Trader Joe's Chocolate Chips Sparks Outcry from Local Kosher Consumers

Some changes to the packaging process mean the chocolate chips may not be an option for some kosher consumers or those with dairy allergies.

Trader Joe's is baking some changes into the way they produce their chocolate chips -- changes that have sparked local and national outcry from kosher consumers. Until recently, the chips were designated by the Brooklyn-based OK Kosher Certification as "pareve," meaning they have not been cooked or mixed with any meat or dairy foods. Under kosher law, meat and dairy must not be cooked or eaten together.  But earlier this month, the chocolate chip manufacturer made some changes to the packaging of the Trader Joe's chips and the OK Kosher Cert. has removed the "pareve" status, which poses a problem for consumers keeping kosher, and those with dairy allergies.
