After being knocked out of the medal race, Stone came back to show everyone what she's made of.
Updated 11:09 a.m. with reaction from Stone It may not have been a medal race, but this morning's "B" final was Gevvie Stone's last chance to make a statement at the 2012 London Olympics. And Stone did exactly that. After just missing out on the medal race, Stone, a Newton Centre native, crossed the finish line first in her women's single sculls final today. She finishes the London Olympics in seventh place overall. “It was a great race. I wanted to come out here and put all the pieces together, row well. I was fortunate to be in lane six and I just put my race together," Stone said in a statement after the race. "I was right with everyone at the 500, which is something I have never done internationally and I just said go with it, long …

Stone finished fourth in her semifinal race this morning, but no longer has a shot at an Olympic medal.
Updated 5:27 p.m. with a reaction from Stone: In a statement issued to Newton Patch Thursday afternoon, Stone admitted she could have rowed more effectively, but is excited for her final on Saturday: “I wanted to go out there and have the race of my life and make the top three. It’s a really fast field and I hoped to go out and catch (Emma Twigg from New Zealand.) She’s fast and I didn’t handle the conditions as well as I could have and I went out there and I did fight and I did think I could have rowed possibly more effectively," Stone said. “But I put my heart out there and I want to go out there in the B final and have the race of my life," she continued. Newton Olympian Gevvie Stone finished second in her quarterfinal race Tuesday morning at Eton Dorney Rowing Centre in England. Here's what she had to say about her race.
It may not have been the best start to an Olympic quarterfinal race, but Gevvie Stone got the job done. "I was definitely in a bad position, I’d say, coming across the first 500 metres. I glanced across them and I could just see people up on me on the right side of the course and I thought, 'I’ve got to make the most of this next 500 (metres),'" Stone said in an emailed statement Tuesday morning. "And at the 1000 (metre) I took another glance and I misjudged who was who, thinking that (Sanita Puspure of Ireland) was the El Salvadorian and that Frida (Svensson of Sweden) was Sanita." "I thought. Oh crap, I need to beat that girl, so over the next 500 (metres) I was thinking I need to finish third, I need to beat that girl," Stone continued…

Stone will move on to the semifinal races on Thurs., August 2 and still has a chance at a medal.
Two races down, two to go. Newton Centre native Gevvie Stone rowed hard this morning to finish second (out of five) in her quarterfinal race for the women's single sculls. The second place finish ranks Stone sixth overall and she will compete in the top two semifinal races on Thurs., August 2 (semifinal A/B). If she is one of the top three boats to finish in her semifinal, she will move on to the top final for a chance at a medal. Stone crossed the finish line in 7.39.67, a slightly slower time from her race in the heats on Saturday. She finished just behind four-time Olympian Miroslava Knapkova of the Czech Republic. Stone competed in the women's single sculls heats on Saturday at Eton Dorney Rowing Center.
As many people here in the U.S. were settling down into their Saturday morning cup of coffee, Newton Olympian Gevvie Stone was rowing through her first Olympic race. Stone, who is competing in the women's single sculls event, placed third in her heat with a time of 7:33.68. The time qualified her for a spot in the event quarterfinals. In an email statement sent to Newton Patch Sunday, Stone said her race was "good, not great" but recognized that the two rowers who finished ahead of her, Ekaterina Karsten (Belarus) and Julia Levina (Russia), are "experienced and respected" women in the sport. "I had a clean, decent race with a strong middle 1,000 (meters)...Now, I'm starting to think about the Tuesday quarterfinal and how to go even …
