Two Democrats and three Republicans submitted the required number of signatures to run in the special election for U.S. Senate, according to the Boston Globe. U.S. Reps. Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) each filed more than double the 10,000 certified signatures required. Markey, who made a stop in Newton last weekend, led the way with nearly 34,000 signatures, while Lynch had just over 25,000. On the Republican side, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan filed nearly 19,000 signatures, followed by former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset at almost 17,000 and state Rep. Congressmen Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch, the two Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate, have agreed to participate in six debates between now and the April 30 primary, according to the Boston Herald. The Boston Herald’s Chris Cassidy Tweeted yesterday that three of the debates will be general format, with the remaining three focusing on jobs, domestic issues and foreign policy. One of the debates will be held in Boston, and others will be held in Lowell, New Bedford, Worcester and Springfield. The location of the sixth debate has not been determined. Former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez will officially launch his U.S. Senate campaign on Thursday and Friday, according to the Boston Herald. Gomez, a Republican from Cohasset, will run for the seat vacated by new Secretary of State John Kerry. His campaign kicks off Thursday with events in Boston and Springfield, according to the Herald. Friday will bring more events on the North and South shores, though the Herald didn’t specify any venues or times. Gomez, known for evading the spotlight, will also likely stop for several “meet-and-greet” events with local leaders and supporters during those two days. It’s starting to shape up into quite a race, as the field of potential Republican candidates for U.S. Senate continues to grow. This week, two more Republicans threw their hats in the proverbial ring in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the appointment of John Kerry to Secretary of State: Norfolk’s Sean Bielat and Cohasset’s Gabriel Gomez. The Associated Press and the Boston Herald are reporting that Massachusetts Congressman Edward Markey, D-Malden, says he will run for Sen. John Kerry's seat, if Kerry is appointed U.S. Secretary of State. Markey, who has been a U.S. Representative since 1976, represents the state's Fifth Congressional District. Markey, the dean of the state's congressional delegation, issued a statement Thursday saying he's decided to run for Kerry's seat. The Malden Democrat, reported the Boston Herald, said the events of recent weeks, from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary to the fiscal cliff debate, have made it clear Massachusetts needs a senator with what he called the "right priorities and values."

Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren has beaten incumbent Republican candidate Scott Brown for a seat on the U.S. Senate, according to the Associated Press. Warren is won by a margin of eight percentage points, 54 percent to 46 percent, making her the first female senator elected in Massachusetts. According to the latest poll by UMass Lowell, Brown had a one point lead heading into election day, but the lead was within the poll's margin of error.
Just a day before election day, a new poll released shows that Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown are virtually tied in the US Senate race among likely voters in Massachusetts. Brown is ahead of Warren by 1 percentage point, 49-48, the poll showed. The one-point advantage is within the poll's 4.1 margin of error. The latest poll was conducted by UMass Lowell's Center for Public Opinion and the Boston Herald. Nearly one thousand Massachusetts voters were surveyed between Wednesday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 3. The poll found that Brown is viewed favorably by 54 percent of the 956 voters surveyed, with 39 percent holding a negative opinion of him, according to the Herald.
