Project Bread's Walk for Hunger is today, May 5. The 20-mile route starts and finishes at the Boston Common and goes through Newton.

Project Bread's annual Walk for Hunger is today, and more than 40,000 people are expected to lace up their shoes and walk 20 miles for antihunger programs in Massachusetts.  Are you doing the walk? We're looking for walkers to upload their photos from the event. We want to see you smiling with your friends along the route, making funny faces at the camera, or enjoying the snack stop at Arsenal Park behind the mall.  If you're looking for a route map, we've got one, plus road closures for Newton. After Marathon Bombings, Walk for Hunger Fundraising, Registrations Slow

Since the Boston Marathon bombings April 15, the Walk for Hunger has seen a dip in its usual fundraising levels, officials say.

  For Project Bread Executive Director Ellen Parker, April 15 to 19 was the week almost everything stopped. In Boston, and in places around the country and world, life as usual stopped as the Boston Marathon bombings unfolded April 15, then came to a dramatic conclusion on April 19 with the death of one bombing suspect and the capture in Watertown of another.  What also stopped that week? The steady flow of registrations and fundraising for Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger, scheduled for Sunday, May 5. The walk, which passes through Newton, is the oldest continuously operating pledge walk in the country, raising money for anti-hunger programs in Massachusetts. “We're trying hard to regain some lost ground,” Parker said.  Online fundraising …

The annual event will kick off Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the Boston Common.

More than 40,000 people will make their way through Newton and surrounding communities this Sunday for the annual Project Bread Walk for Hunger. Sunday's walk is a 20-mile route that passes through Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown and Cambridge. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. on Boston Common. The annual walk raises money and awareness for local hunger and supports the more than 750,000 people in Massachusetts who do not have enough food to eat.  Before all those walkers make their way through the local streets, be sure to read through some local road closures and detours that will affect Newton on Sun., May 5: Last year, Newton contributed $120,000 to the annual Walk for Hunger, with 583 Newton residents participating in the Walk.  …

Newton Food Pantry Gets Funding from Walk for Hunger

Project Bread awards more than $78,000 raised in the Walk for Hunger.

  This is an edited version of a press release from Project Bread:  Project Bread, a leading Massachusetts antihunger organization, has awarded $78,700 in grants to emergency food programs throughout the west-of-Boston rea, through funds raised by the 44th annual Walk for Hunger. The grants will support programs such as food pantries, schools, farms, food banks, food salvage programs, and other community organizations providing hunger relief. More than 43,000 supporters walked to raise money to help the hungry. In the west-of-Boston area, 22 different agencies will benefit from these grants. Plan on driving through Newton on Sunday? Check these road closures before heading out.

Project Bread's 2012 Walk for Hunger is just a couple of days away, and those heading through Greater Boston could hit a bit of traffic while they're out and about on Sunday. Sunday's walk is a 20-mile route that passes through Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown and Cambridge. More than 40,000 people will participate in the event, which kicks off at 9 a.m. on Boston Common. The MBTA provides free rides to anyone traveling with a walk guide or online registration certificate between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday. Newton Road Closures/Delays for Sunday's Walk for Hunger

Make sure you read these traffic alerts from Newton Police before heading out Sunday.

The annual Project Bread Walk for Hunger will be making its way through the area Sunday. But before roughly 40,000 people traverse through parts of Newton, here are some local road closures and delays that could affect you: Once in Watertown, the Walk for Hunger will come down Galen Street and continue across the bridge and head into Watertown Square, then along Charles River Road. Walkers will then head through the Commanders Gate into Arsenal Park in Watertown, which will serve as a key stop for participants, said Margaret Sloat, director of development for Project Bread.  The park will be the location of the snack stop. “We love the change. The Walk for Hunger will be moving through Newton tomorrow and traffic will be delayed on Beacon and Centre Streets as the event works its way into Watertown. Tune in to Newton Patch at 11 a.m. today where we will have all the road closures for you. Tomorrow is also Medication Take-Back Day at Newton Police Headquarters. Bring your unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications to the rear of the police headquarters for an anonymous drop-off.
