Two People Hospitalized After West Newton Crash Wednesday Night

The accident occurred just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Two people were transported to area hospitals Wednesday night after a head-on collision in West Newton, according to the Newton Fire Department. In a post on its Twitter feed this morning, the Fire Department said the accident occurred near the intersection of Cherry Street and Derby Street. Engine 4 and Ladder 1 responded to the scene. According to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, a call for the two-car accident came in at 9:36 p.m. The accident location was around 154 Cherry St. Newton Police and Fire could not provide additional details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation. Newton Chef Named as James Beard Award Semifinalist

The winners will be announced on May 6 in New York City.

Newton's hometown celebrity chef Michael Leviton has been nominated once again for a James Beard Award in the "Best Chef: Northeast" category. Leviton, who grew up in Newton Centre, is the man behind the popular Lumière restaurant in West Newton. According to the James Beard Foundation website, Leviton and Lumière have been nominated for the Best Chef: Northeast award six other times (2005-2010).  The list of award semifinalists will be narrowed down to a list of finalists, which will be announced on Monday, March 18, according to Eater.com. The winners will be announced on Monday, May 6. 'Ca$h Mob' on its Way to West Newton

Following in Auburndale's footsteps, the West Newton community will hold a "Ca$h Mob" event to support small business.

First spotted in Auburndale earlier this month, the Newton "Ca$h Mob" is making its way to West Newton.  The event, which looks to promote local small businesses, encourages residents to bring $10 (or more) to spend at West Newton businesses from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. According to an email sent to Newton Patch by Alderman Greer Tan Swiston, shoppers are encouraged to visit businesses from Parsons Street to the Mass Pike off-ramp, as well as retailers on Boarder Street, Elm Street and Watertown Street.  Those who are interested in participating in the Ca$h Mob can meet at the "start location" at Morningsilver Gallery at 10 a.m. The "end location" will be at Keltic Krust at 11 a.m., the email said. MIT's West Newton Village Area Plan Now Available

The area plan, which was developed by MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning, looks at a number of aspects including land use, parking, circulation and open space.

Following months of research and multiple public presentations, graduate students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have released their final recommendations to develop and improve the village of West Newton.  In the report, MIT students outline various planning areas including parking, traffic circulation, land use and open space.  To view the full report, click the .pdf to the right.  "Our plan fosters a vibrant environment where local businesses and institutions thrive in the Village Core, providing the places where neighbors and visitors gather, shop, work and play," the report's introduction reads.  The study of West Newton has involved graduate students from the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning who …

Tonight: "Envisioning West Newton" Presentation and Conversation

Do you care about economic development and improvements to West Newton Village and Washington Street? Stop by City Hall this evening for this community event.

Join the Planning and Development Department tonight at City Hall for a conversation about West Newton Village, future development in the area and improvements to Washington Street. The department will welcome graduate students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Urban Studies and Planning who have studied West Newton and its potential for growth and redevelopment. According to a memo from the Planning & Development Department, the students will present their findings as well as some analysis on zoning, parking, transportation, economic development and infrastructure.  MIT students have done similar projects in Newton with proposed development and improvement on Needham Street.  The public is encouraged to …
