As Tough Season Continues, Future Remains Bright For Lions Boys Lacrosse

Newton South loses to Westford Academy, 10-3.

Not yet fully blossomed, the budding Newton South boys lacrosse team was unable to compete at a high-caliber level for a whole 48 minutes Tuesday afternoon leading to a 10-3 loss to Dual County (Large) League-foe Westford Academy. “We’re young,” said Lions head coach David McCallum. “We can hang there for a little bit, but once one guy gets tired, one guy doesn’t run the play full speed--that’s what kills us.” He added, “Westford’s a state tournament team. They’re a good state tournament team, which means that they basically play top competition during the season. We don’t have the horses yet. We’ll get there.” The loss drops the Lions to 2-15 on the season. Meanwhile, the playoff-bound Grey Ghosts improve to 12-6. “Considering the …

Lions Girls Lacrosse Start Strong, But Stumble in Loss Against Westford

Newton South falls to Westford Academy, 9-5.

The Newton South girls lacrosse team had such an auspicious first half going with a 3-1 advantage. But regrettably for the Lions, their lead quickly evaporated in the last two minutes of the first half, and their fortunes fared no better in the second half as they would go on to lose to Dual County (Large)  League opponent Westford Academy, 9-5, Tuesday afternoon.   “We were playing really hard,” said Newton South head coach Katie Neal-Rizzo. “We haven’t played this close to Westford in probably five years, so I’m really happy with that.” With the defeat, the Lions fall to 4-5 on the season. The Grey Ghosts, meanwhile, earn their first victory of the year and are 1-5. “They could have played better, but it feels good to get the win,” said …

The Newton South boys basketball team lost to Westford Academy 67-59.

With Newton-Westford boys basketball games, Westford Academy Coach Ed Scolla knows it's always going to come down to a single digit.  "This was a typical Wesford-Newton game, every time we get down to Newton we have to play hard," Scolla said. "They're just a good team, well coached...its a struggle every time we get down there." Nevertheless, the Grey Ghosts managed to walk away with a win last night over the Lions, 67-59. "We played real well, they're one of the best teams in the state," said Newton South Coach Joe Killilea. "The score is not indicative of how the kids played...I'm really proud of the way they played tonight." Killilea noted that Westford focused on the Lions' lead scorer, DJ Reid. While Reid averages 21 points per game…

He had 10 in the first quarter alone. Newton South was lead by Reid, freshman forward Phil Levine-Caleb (11 points) and senior guard Solomon Lansana (11 points). Photo Gallery: Newton South Runners Finish First, Second at DCL Championship

Both Newton South boys and girls cross country finished fifth overall.

Amid overcast skies and warmer-than-average temperatures, the Newton South boys and girls cross country teams made their city proud with first and second individual finishes yesterday. Newton's David Melly beat out 82 runners from 11 schools in the boys varsity race. Melly finished first in the three-mile race with a time of 15:82 and an average mile of just over five minutes. "For the first mile, I was a bit stiff," Melly said after the race. "Overall, it was a tough race. When we came out of the woods, a coach yelled to me,'no regrets,' so I gave it everything I had until the end." In the girls varsity race, Newton South's Kathy O'Keefe crossed the finish line second, just two seconds behind first place finisher Andrea Keklak of Lincoln-…

Newton South Boys Soccer: Same Old Story

Mistakes, which have plagued the Lions all season, lead to a 3-1 loss to the Grey Ghosts.

Coach John Conte recognizes the trend in his Newton South boys soccer team. The Lions play competitively, but crucial mistakes and failed scoring opportunities lead to a defeat. "Story of the season," Conte said. "A lot of opportunities for us to score and not being able to capitalize." This time, the similar narrative transpired during a 3-1 defeat to Dual County (Large) foe Westford Academy Wednesday afternoon. The loss leaves the Lions at 3-10-3 on the season while Westford improves to 8-6-2. Newton South's first crucial mistake happened nine minutes into the game. The Lion defenders thought they had trapped the Grey Ghost forwards offside, but the referee did not blow the whistle. Westford Academy's Derrick Naugler slid a pass over the…

Football: Rushing Defense Missing for the Lions

Newton South's lack of run defense leads to a 34-13 loss to Westford Academy.

The Newton South High School football team had a plan Saturday for Westford Academy: cover the air game and stop the run. Unfortunately for the Lions, they could not accomplish the second part of their plan--leading to a 34-13 home turf loss to their Dual County (Large) foe Grey Ghosts. The defeat came in Newton South's first league game and leaves it with a 1-6 overall record. Westford employed a prolific ground game in the first half rushing for 141 yards, including 57 yards on the opening drive. The Grey Ghosts used a three-prong rushing attack comprised of quarterback Patrick Dugan and running backs Mark Hennessy and Zach Ingalls.   "We were trying to double cover a couple of their guys," said Lions head coach Ted Dalicandro. "We …

Newton South Football Hopes to Clean Up its Act

The young team is looking to minimize their mistakes in Saturday's game against Westford Academy.

Sometimes in high school football, it's all about the breaks and how that misshaped ball bounces on the turf. Unfortunately for Newton South, the breaks and bounces this season haven't been going in the right direction. The Lions are 1-5 on the season, and a young, inexperienced team is learning the hard way on the job. The record might not show it, but head coach Ted Dalicandro sees a group of young men who are very close to turning it around. "We are playing good football," he said. "One or two plays in each game and we are looking at 3-3 or 4-2 instead of 1-5." The young team is scheduled to play Westford Academy (4-2) later today at home. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. It's been a season of crucial mistakes, according to the coach, and …
