State Police Identify Man Arrested After I-90 Chase, Collision

The information below was provided by the Massachusetts State Police. Where arrests and charges are mentioned it does not indicate a conviction.

One man is under arrest and another man suffered minor injuries after a short chase on the Massachusetts Turnpike that went through Newton Tuesday afternoon. According to the Massachusetts State Police, Roberto Rivera, 33, of Worcester was arrested this afternoon following a brief chase on the Pike. Police said they received reports of an erratic driver traveling eastbound on the Pike near Weston. A check on the license plate number revealed the car, a 2004 Acura MDX sport utility vehicle, had been reported stolen from Holyoke earlier this month. When an officer attempted to stop Rivera east of the Weston tollbooths, he refused to stop and "accelerated in an attempt to flee," a police press release reads. According to Twitter reports, …

Massachusetts State Police have one suspect in custody following failure to stop on Mass Pike.

Updated: An additional announcement from the Office of Media Relations relayed the following: The below pursuit began at approximately 12:35 p.m. after the State Police Barracks in Weston received calls of an erratic vehicle travelling eastbound in the Weston area. A check of the provided license plate revealed the car to be stolen. A trooper observed and attempted to stop the car. The operator refused to stop and accelerated in an attempt to flee. After a brief pursuit the operator lost control of the car and crashed. He was taken into custody. The suspect suffered minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing. Should the State Install High-Speed Tolls on I-93?

Asked about toll fairness during a Patch live chat, Governor Deval Patrick asked a reader whether he'd support high-speed tolls. Are these a good way to share the transportation funding pain, or another money grab?

Are high-speed tolls along Interstate 93 and other highways a smart way to help fund transportation in the state? Governor Deval Patrick mentioned such a system during a Patch live chat on Thursday. If you've gone up Interstate 95 into New Hampshire, you've seen high-speed tolling in action. The system is designed to read your EZ-Pass (new Fast Lane) transponder while you breeze by at 65 miles per hour. There's no need to slow down or squeeze though a booth, as EZ-Pass users currently do on the Mass Pike, Tobin Bridge and harbor tunnels. Tolls: how to encourage people to drive on less fuel-efficient roads and increaase traffic through towns. Bad public policy. Nothing but another tax. The Mass Pike was supposed to be toll-free after the initial bonds were paid off (long ago). Want fairness? Dump the Mass Pike tolls instead.   more ›

Updated: Reported Jumper at Crowne Plaza Removed Safely by Newton Fire Department

Updated 6/9 with information from the Newton Police Log: A woman was "barely hanging on" to the outside of a chain-link fence yesterday on top of the Crowne Plaza parking garage, according to Newton Police reports. Reports of the incident issued Thursday included information from officers who arrived on the scene where a woman who, according to scanner reports, was trying to jump from the building.  The reports said responding police attempted to talk to her but she "appeared despondent." Reports also said the woman was on the north side of the garage and was hanging on to the fence with only two fingers. Police said they continued talking with the woman until fire crews showed up with a ladder truck and an aerial bucket to remove her …
