Sheriff Peter Koutoujian Visits Newton JCC

Koutoujian stopped by the Leventhan-Sidman Jewish Community Center last week to talk to senior citizens about the role of the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office and the danger of scams targeted toward seniors.

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian recently stopped by Newton's Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center to speak to senior citizens about the role of his office and how it affects Newton residents. Koutoujian explained much of the office's role in the state's correctional system as well as the programs offered to inmates.  In addition, Koutoujian visited the JCC to speak about phone scams that target senior citizens. In particular, Koutoujian highlighted the popular "grandson scheme." This involves scam callers contacting senior citizens and claiming that their grandson or granddaughter was involved in an accident or arrested in a foreign country. The caller then asks the senior citizen to wire money to help the grandchild. The …

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian Visits with Newton Rotary

Koutoujian stopped in Newton last week to talk about the programs his office provides for seniors and young students.

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian made a stop in Newton last week to speak with the Newton Rotary Club about his role as sheriff and the programs his office provides to the community.  Koutoujian met spoke with a group of two dozen Rotary members and guests on February 26 at the Newton Marriott, Koutoujian's office said in a statement Tuesday. The meeting included a presentation about ongoing initiatives at the sheriff's office as well as programs for seniors and students. Koutoujian highlighted the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA), which had 25 Newton children participate in 2012.  Koutoujian, a former state representative in the 10th Middlesex District, will be back in Newton tomorrow to speak with …

Middlesex County Sheriff Pays Off His Chowder Debt

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian recently lost a bet over the AFC Championship game.

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian followed through on his promise and delivered New England Clam Chowder to the Waltham-based RECH Beyond Domestic Violence on Tuesday, Jan. 29. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Koutoujian, who lives in Waltham, delivered the chowder to the domestic violence assistance organization to pay off the bet he made with Baltimore Sheriff John Anderson over the outcome of the AFC Championship football game during which the New England Patriots lost to the Baltimore Ravens.  The chowder will go to domestic violence victims. “REACH is an organization with whom I have had a long affiliation. Middlesex Sheriff's Office Employee Charged With Fraud

Joyce Drinkwater was charged with knowingly presenting a fraudulent claim to a public employer for a benefit.

A Middlesex County Sheriff's Office employee is facing criminal fraud chagres for allegedly working another job while she remained on medical leave from the sheriff's office. Joyce Drinkwater, 67, of Malden was charged on Nov. 19 with knowingly presenting a fraudulent claim to a public employer for a benefit, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. The sheriff's jurisdiction includes Newton, among other communities.  Drinkwater is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 13 at Malden District Court. Drinkwater allegedly collected her full salary as she stayed on medical leave from the sheriff's office and claimed she could not work, according to the DA's office.  "This employee's alleged actions bring undeserved dishonor to …

UPDATED: Middlesex Sheriff's Department Sergeant Guilty on Cocaine Charges

The sheriff's officer was pressuring an inmate for money and drugs and conducted a drug transaction with an undercover state trooper, according to the district attorney's office.

Updated 10:39 p.m. with a statement from Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian: "After receiving an anonymous tip, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into allegations of drug use by Sergeant Michael Dell’Isola. Our internal affairs unit immediately turned over information gathered during its probe to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and worked hand in hand with the State Police throughout the subsequent investigation. The actions of Mr. Dell'Isola in this case are troubling, but they should not be allowed to taint the good work performed each and every day by the dedicated men and women of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office. Newton Students Graduate from Youth Public Safety Academy

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian visited the Newton YPSA students earlier this week and on Friday, the students graduated from the academy.

The following is a press release from the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office: Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian proudly recognized the Cambridge, Newton, Waltham and Watertown graduates of the 2012 Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA) on Friday, August 24, 2012. The ceremony, which recognized some 146 children ages 9-11, was held at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Training Academy in Billerica. Of those who attended the academy this week, 42 cadets were from Cambridge, 25 were from Newton, 47 were from Waltham and 32 were from Watertown. This is the 13th year of the free academy. The eight-week academy is funded through revenues generated by the sheriff’s civil process division. Each week, youngsters from 2-4 …

Reports: Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff Died from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Prior to Crash

The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. Wednesday on Treble Cove Road in Billerica.

The Middlesex County deputy sheriff who was found dead after an early-morning, single-car crash in Billerica Wednesday may have accidentally shot himself in the head, according to the Lowell Sun. The Middlesex County Sheriff’s office has identified the deputy as Edward “Teddy” Dillon III, 27, of Lowell, but has not commented on his cause of death. The Middlesex County District Attorney’s office has only said that his death was not suspicious and no charges are being filed, according to the Sun report. Dillon’s police cruiser, which sustained heavy front-end damage, was found at 4 a.m. on Treble Cove Road in Billerica. He was on duty at the time of the incident. UPDATED: Middlesex County Corrections Officer Killed in Single-Car Crash

The single-car crash happened Wednesday at 4 a.m. on Treble Cove Road in Billerica.

Updated 11:53 a.m.  According to a press release issued by the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office, the victim of this morning's crash was Correction Officer Edward "Teddy" Dillon III, 27, of Lowell. Dillon, who had been with the Middlesex Sheriff's Office since 2008, worked at the Middlesex County House of Correction in Billerica and his job involved taking perimeter checks of the property. Coakley Closes DiPaola Investigation With No Criminal Charges

Details of possible "pay-to-play" contributions emerged in an investigation by the State Attorney General's Office into the actions of former Middlesex County Sheriff James DiPaola.

The State House News Service reported Wednesday that Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has closed the investigation into the Middlesex Sheriff's Office under the late James DiPaola without any criminal charges, despite evidence of a "pay-to-play culture." After a series of conflict of interest fines levied against Middlesex Sheriff's Office employees over the past year (see previous articles below), one last fine has been levied: a $4,000 fine against DiPaola's sister and campaign treasurer, Patricia Covelle, according to the State House News Service.
