Newton North loses to Haverhill, 3-2.
Exhibiting a resilient nature, the Newton North boys volleyball team dug itself out of a two-games-to-none hole to Haverhill, forcing a fifth game in the Div. 1 state semi-final Thursday night at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. There, the Tigers seized a 8-5 advantage on an Eric Hollenberg kill before the Hillies tied the game and eventually went on to the 15-11 triumph. That gave Haverhill the 3-2 victory and a shot at the state title against Lincoln-Sudbury Monday. The score of the other sets were 27-25, 25-20, 12-25, 21-25. “That team played really well,” said Tigers head coach Richard Barton. “We faltered a little bit at the end in the fifth game. That’s really unfortunate. I feel really badly. We had so many players who …

The Black and Orange dominated the first two sets winning both 25-8, but the Boxers (11-8) showed signs of life in the third game before eventually falling to the score of 25-20. “It is very pleasing when our team comes out and plays entirely sharp according to our game plan,” said Newton North head coach Richard Barton. “Doesn’t happen very often in sports at any level. They passed everything. They hit everything in. They blocked everything. They got everything in defense. They served in. It is sort of like that perfect wave.” Newton North (15-2) will look …
