Newton South defeats Durfee, 3-0.
Embarking on a quest to three-peat as the Div. 1 South Sectional titleholder, the No. 4 Newton South boys volleyball team showed signs of rust during the opening set of its quarterfinal match against No. 5 Durfee. But the Lions (17-4) regained their championship composure and went on to defeat the Hilltoppers, 3-0, Monday night. The scores were 25-22, 25-14, and 25-16. “We were a little tentative the first set,” said Newton South head coach Todd Elwell. “We had some issues with a few service errors. Attacking-wise, we finally got some balls off of their serves. On our serve-receive, we did a great job getting the ball to the setter and then the hitters slowly got a little warmer. Being off for eight days sometimes is a little bit of a …

Newton South defeats Cambridge Rindge and Latin, 3-1, and gets ready for the playoffs.
Newton South boys volleyball coach Todd Elwell knew his team needed to take Cambridge Rindge and Latin out of its comfort zone to attain victory Wednesday afternoon. The Lions managed to do just that for the first two sets, but the Falcons found their groove in the third, before Newton South ended the contest in the next set earning the 3-1 triumph. The scores were 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-23. “We knew if we gave them too many free balls, they would hit them right back at us,” said Elwell. “So we had to get in a situation in which we attacked a little bit more on serve, take them out of system a little bit. But that’s what made it close the last few. We just didn’t take them out of system enough and they were able to hang around and …

Bouncing back from a two set deficit, South lost 3-2 to host Lincoln-Sudbury on Wednesday.
The two-set comeback by Newton South's boys volleyball team was an impressive effort, but not quite enough to bring the Lions a "W" Wednesday night. After coming back from a two set deficit, the second place Lions dropped the deciding set to lose 3-2 to Dual County League (Large) leaders Lincoln-Sudbury. “We came in knowing we were going to have our backs against the wall,” said South coach Todd Elwell. “It took us a little while to get warmed up and acclimated, but we showed a lot of courage by hanging in there during games three and four.” After dropping the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17, the Lions (11-4, 9-2) bounced back to win the next two sets 25-22 and 25-21, respectively. L-S (12-1, 11-0) responded by grabbing a 15-11 victory in …
