Current Oak Hill principal Eva Thompson will be retiring at the end of this school year."
Newton Superintendent David Fleishman announced today that he has appointed John Harutunian as the new principal at Oak Hill Middle School. Harutunian, who is currently assistant principal at Robert Adams Middle School in Holliston, will replace current Oak Hill principal Eva Thompson. Thompson announced earlier this year her plans to retire at the end of this school year after 37 years in Newton, four of which were spent as principal at Oak Hill. In a letter sent to Oak Hill parents and staff Friday morning, Fleishman said Harutunian impressed the district with his passion for middle school education as well as his commitment to the academic and emotional well-being of students. "John is a leader who truly values school and community …

Newton student Abigail Miller collected instruments for the Berklee Instrument and Equipment Donation Program (BID/BED) as part of her bat mitzvah project.
When Oak Hill Middle School student Abigail Miller started to think about her bat mitzvah project, she knew right away it would involve music. But how it would involve music was another question. "When I went to my saxophone lesson one day, me and my teacher were thinking about things I could do [for the mitzvah project]," Miller tells Patch. "She put me in touch with Abria Smith, who does the equipment donation program at Berklee [College of Music]...and I figured it out." For the last year or so, Miller has been collecting instruments for the Berklee Instrument and Equipment Donation Program (BID/BED), a Berklee-run program that provides instruments and equipment to Boston Public School students, Boys and Girls Clubs and other community…

Eleven years ago today, the Newton community was struck with tragedy when four Oak Hill Middle School students were killed in a bus accident in New Brunswick, Canada. Despite the decade gone by, the Newton community still works to keep alive the memory of eighth grader Mellissa Leung and seventh graders Kayla Rosenberg, Greg Chan and Stephen Glidden. The four students were members of the school band, which was on its way to a school performance in Halifax. Forty-two students were on board the bus with five chaperones, many of them seriously injured. For full details and background, check out this CNN report from the tragedy. Each year, the community holds a Circle of Remembrance outside Oak Hill Middle School to mark the tragic day and …

NECN reports that Oak Hill Middle School parents recently received a letter asking them to refrain from having their kids wear clothes showing "weekend celebrations."
The Oak Hill Middle School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) recently sent a letter home to parents asking that students not wear "celebratory clothing." As reported on NECN, the council is hoping students will not wear t-shirts or clothes with another student's name on it that may have come from a birthday party or bar mitzvah over the weekend. While one parent who spoke to NECN felt the request was "coddling", the PTO says these "weekend celebration" shirts have the potential to remind some students that they were left out or not invited to the particular celebration. "As educators we are concerned about the unintentional messages that are conveyed when groups of students wear the same celebratory clothing from weekend events," an …
