Three Newton Students Win National Art Awards

The three Newton students were honored as part of the 90th Annual National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

After taking home top prizes in the state competition, three Newton students were recently honored with awards in the 90th Annual National Scholastic Art & Writing Contest.  The three Newton students earned silver medals in the national competition, according to a recent report on Boston.com. The students are: The Massachusetts students who qualify for the national competition must earn Gold Key awards in the state competition. Newton high school students earned a total of 26 Gold Key Awards in the state competition, 20 of which were awarded to Newton South students. According to Boston.com, 92 Massachusetts students grades 7-12 were honored at the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, placing the state as the fourth largest medal …

Newton Students Earn More than 80 Scholastic Art Awards

Newton South topped the list with 42 awards, more than any other Newton school.

With more than 80 awards won by 70 students, Newton was certainly well-represented in this year's Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  Among Newton's high schools, Newton South High School took home the most honors, with 42 awards between 33 students.  The 42 awards at Newton South included 20 Gold Key Awards, 12 Silver Key Awards and 10 Honorable Mentions, according to a press release issued by the Newton South Arts Department.  In addition, Newton South students won the most film and animation awards of any school in the state, the press release said.  Over at Newton North High School, 24 students took home a total of 29 awards, including six Gold Key Awards, 14 Silver Key Awards and nine Honorable Mentions. Newton South Students Win National Photography Awards

The Newton South photographers were selected from 200,000 works of art submitted to the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Four Newton South High School students recently took home five national awards for their photography work.  Seniors Olivia Kennis, Nicole Kestenberg, Adam Macalister and junior Jonathan Stricker received two gold medals and three silver medals in the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, according to a press release issued by Newton South Arts. While all four students received awards for individual entries, Kestenberg also took home a silver medal for her entire senior photography portfolio. Kestenberg was the only student in Massachusetts to receive an award for her whole portfolio, the press release said.  "We are proud to have our students represent our school in this year’s National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards," the press release …
