New Wheels Help Spread Innovation Across Newton Schools

Thanks to a donation from Village Bank, the Newton Public Schools' Innovation Lab was able to purchase a bus that will help students explore innovation in Newton and Greater Boston.

From bike-powered smoothies to recipes for biodiesel, there are dozens of creative and inspiring projects being built inside Newton North's Innovation Lab.  Now, the those ideas -- and the students behind them -- are ready to hit the road.  Thanks to a $40,000 gift from The Village Bank, the Newton Public Schools' Innovation Lab can now purchase two, 15-passenger buses to help expand innovative learning experiences for students across the district.  "A couple of years ago, when the idea of the Innovation Lab first bubbled up, we started thinking about the students and what we could do to connect and maintain the community they come from," says Steve Chinosi, the Lab's Chief Innovation Officer. Annual Newton Holiday Gift Drive is Underway

Donations of gift certificates and new, unwrapped gifts for children ages newborn to 10 will be accepted from November 19 through December 14.

While you're out doing your holiday shopping this year, you can help one of your Newton neighbors just by picking up an extra toy or gift certificate.  The Village Bank has once again partnered with the Newton Department of Health and Human Services for the annual Holiday Gift Drive.  The drive, which helps hundreds of Newton families in need, will run from Nov. 19 through Dec. 14. Drop-off locations include Village Bank branches in Auburndale, Newtonville, Nonantum, Newton Highlands, Waban and West Newton. “People are still struggling as a result of the economy,” Village Bank President and CEO Kenneth C. Brennan said in a press release. “But we’re confident that those who can will step up and help make a difference again this year.” …

Village Bank Robbed in Newton, Suspect Apprehended

The Waban bank was robbed around 9 a.m. Friday.

Updated 1:10 p.m. The suspect who robbed the Village Bank in Waban this morning has been identified by Newton Police as Payton R. Lashon, 37, of Boston, according to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker.  Lashon was apprehended by Newton Police shortly after he robbed the bank. He is charged with armed robbery and resisting arrest.  11:42 a.m.  According to Newton Fire Deputy Mike Castro, the substance the suspect sprayed in the bank was green and was contained in a 16-ounce plastic bottle. The substance has been deemed not harmful, but it is still unidentified. The substance will be taken to a state lab for testing and identification.  A 27-year-old employee was sent to the hospital for evaluation along with two paramedics. They have since …
