Angier and Cabot Elementary schools are the two oldest schools in the district, and Zervas is one of the most crowded, officials say.
Have you ever wanted to see the inside of some of Newton's elementary schools? Well, now is your chance. The district administration has posted a video (see above) that tours the Angier, Cabot and Zervas schools. The video aims to show the aging and cramped facilities, as funding for the reconstruction and/or renovation of these three elementary schools will be decided in a March 12 special election for the mayor's $11.4 million override package. What do you think -- are you still for/against the override? Does this video change your mind? Tell us in the comments section below.
The committee voted 8-1 in favor of installing four modular classrooms at three elementary schools.
After receiving a new recommendation last week, the School Committee last night voted 8-1 in favor of installing four modular classrooms at three of the district's elementary schools. Under the approved recommendation, Burr and Horace Mann Elementary Schools will each receive one modular classroom and Zervas Elementary will receive two. Each school will also have to be fitted with new sprinkler systems due to a law recently passed requiring buildings that undergo renovations to have sprinklers installed throughout the building. Matt Hills was the only committee member to vote against the recommendation, noting that while he supports the modular classrooms, he felt as though the vote could get the committee "in trouble," as there is no …

The plan includes four modulars and an estimated price tag of $1.6 million.
After having to reconsider its initial facilities recommendation due to unexpected sprinkler costs, the School Committee now has a new recommendation to consider that outlines four modular classrooms at three of the district's elementary schools. The plan, which was presented during a special School Committee meeting last night, would install two modular classrooms at Zervas and one each at Burr and Horace Mann Elementary Schools. Sprinkler systems -- which are now required with the new additions -- would also be installed with the modulars. "Tonight’s recommendation is to allow the School Committee to get as much information as possible," said Deputy Superintendent/Chief Administrative Officer Sandy Guryan. "We’re working every day on …
