Newton'a loss is Dana-Farber's gain. I wish you great success there, the work they do is so important. -

ReplyNathan's is very good, but I'd rather have the old Joe & Nemo's! I also wonder how long this latest Yogurt craving will last.

On the article Markey or Gomez: Who Would You Vote for Today?

If only The Right to Choose was "well established". In far too many states Right
Wing Pols are pushing for harsher and more restrictive measures against those who choose to exercise their constitutional rights. II matter not if they want their rights on their bodies (birth control, sex education, and abortions when needed) or new laws about who would be allowed to marry whom. The Right (your Conserves may or may not be a part of this plot against women) is very active all over the country. Just because we in Massachusetts are relatively safe from the hatred of women the right is pushing elsewhere, does not mean it does not exist. -

ReplyEven though I am a dyed in the wool Liberal and wear that mantle proudly, Gomez is impressive. But not at the national level yet. Too much, too soon. I am happy that he supports a woman's right to choose, but in reality that will limit him from any important role with the other Republicans who deny rights to more than half the population. Markey has the experience and the contacts to, if he wants and we demand it, get things done. I do hope Gomez decides to run for a State wide office after he looses this election.

ReplyMy first thought on seeing the headline and then opening the story was...Since when is Waltham in Newton? THANK YOU for the upfront explanation. So many "news outlets" today would not think of letting the reading public in on the change right away. Bravo Michele!

On the article New Subway Opening in Newtonville

ReplyObviously you are not alone in enjoying Subway. I too used to enjoy it. YEARS ago when they were in CT. As a matter of fact they used to be a customer of mine when I was in another profession. But for you to accuse me of being an "Organicist" is absurd. There is nothing better than a big greasy fat laden burger. Or a great meatball. I do not nor ever have done my weekly shopping at Whole Foods. I voiced my opinion AGAINST the NYC ban on large drinks. By the way, the food ban that Mayor Mennino opposed was Chick Fil A, not Walmart. As an aside, I have been to C-F-A a number of times in Palm Beach County, FL and their food did not impress me. I did not associate Subway with Walmart. You did. I just said Subway was similar to Walmart. As for the "Plastic ban", I opinedin The Patch that unless the Board of Aldermen propose an affordable substitute, they should not outlaw it use.
I have long been in favor of more businesses opening in Newton (see my run for Alderman at Large in the early 1980's) and will continue to push for them. I jut want those store that do open to be honest with the public. To be, to quote you..."Authentically Fresh". And of course to serve real turkey since a Turkey Sub is my personal favorite -

ReplyI forgot to add that Subway has become the Walmart of mediocre restaurants. When Subway comes in, local, well established sub shops are forced out as they cannot compete with the advertising budget.

ReplySubway, unlike Champagne, doesn't thrill me at all.(apologies to Cole Porter) Even though their slogan is "Eat Fresh", their products are not all that fresh. Sure, they are not all that old, but when you have all your meats and cheeses pre-sliced and piled up, this is not FRESH. Certainly not in the truest of culinary terms. Granted, Subway has become a huge business and they have to be doing something right. To me, when I want for example a turkey sub, I want real turkey, just like you would get it off the frame. Subway does not come close to meeting my standards of real turkey. D'Angelos on the other hand, exceeds my turkey standards. Maybe I would like Subway more if they stopped trying to fool people with their "Fresh" claims.

ReplyAre you asking or telling us that Harvard University enforces a secular code? If you are asking, may I ask you if that code is based on the 10 Commandments? Like virtually all of our laws? I am willing to bet that the Rules of Conduct in no way FORCE a student to violate their own beliefs. I know of no rule that forces a student to use birth control or any other practice that a religion would ban. In other words, the "secular" laws .do not force people to act against their beliefs. But they do give a person the right and ability to make their own choice.

In the more than 2 years of this investigation, how many crimes were committed by this group? Were there any robberies? Burglaries? Home invasions? Armed Robberies? Assaults? Were there any injuries to people? Murders? I realize of course that enough evidence must be gathered, enough to get convictions. But I can only hope that in this long period of investigation, no one got hurt. Oh wait, how about those people who were addicted to the pills and their families? I don't have an answer, but there must be a quicker way to get these criminals off the streets. Ps. This comes from a card carrying Liberal!
