On the Blog Post Why Should Newton Provide $7.5M/Year Worth of Educational Services to Other Towns for Free?

"The community voted" We thought we made it clear that nearly 68% of the community didn't know, didn't show or just didn't care about the issue.
"and it's clear that they thought the 3 overrides made sense."
18% of Newton's registered voters bought what Setti Hall was selling."We also can now be assured that we'll be in a position to handle the incoming surge of students well. "
You mean that the $113M/year in increased annual spending that took place from 1995 to 2013 wasn't enough? We thought that would have been more than sufficient to handle that."They will all get the education they deserve and we can make sure that we continue up the improvement curve as the NPS administration and the SC engage fully on improving student achievement with goals, measurement and accountability fully in view."
We can only hope that the School Committee won't be making any more pathetic excuses as to why Newton fails to outperform towns that spend significantly less money per student than Newton. -

Well, hopefully Newton's renters will scotch their idea of how "they don't have to worry about real estate taxes going up because they're renters" when their landlords raise their rents to offset the higher property taxes that they will have to pay.
A number of our members and supporters were renters and were able to make the connection between real estate taxes and rents charged. Hopefully, their efforts will be recognized by the people that they rent from and they won't be subject to higher rents due to this big tax hike.

It's a shame that three extravagantly expensive property tax hikes have passed thanks to the whims of 17.5% of the voting population. Only 14.7% of the people opposed it. The rest (67.8%) either didn't know, didn't show or didn't care.

Well, at least Joshua Norman and his group was willing to devote time and energy to try to defeat three extravagantly expensive property tax increases even against all odds.
You on the other hand are a little anonymous troll who doesn't even have the courage to post under his or her real name. We would have thought that since Janet Sterman figured out that there was no Walter Jones in the voter list and since there is no Walter Jones in Newton in the yellowpages.com or the whitepages.com, you would have crawled back to the rock from which you spawned.
So who are you really? Geoff Epstein? Come on big boy.

WRT "Constant demands for more taxes? One successful override (2002) in 30 years is not exactly a constant demand!"
This is the third override ballot initiative in the last 11 years and Maureen Lemieux is promising another one in five to six years.
http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/regionals/west/2013/03/03/wenewton/msVikZu3JZkagG3z3UghvM/story.htmlOf course we voted. Unfortunately, it appears that voter turnout was way down relative to the 2002 and 2008 elections.

Apparently, the majority of Newton voters were too apathetic to even vote one way or the other.

If you look at the turnout, Voter apathy was the real winner tonight.
We don't know why we even bother dignifying you with a response since you're an anonymous little troll. Whereas with our group Moving Newton Forward with Fiscal Responsibility, you can see who our group members are.

ReplyActualy Ryan, the actual cost increase increased by just under 3.75% during that 9 year period.
The cumulative increase was 39% versus an inflation adjusted enrollment adjusted expected increase of 28%

Reply"do not like personal attacks or verbal abuse."
Personal attacks and verbal abuse is what happens when someone contradicts a left-winger."They like to hear arguments based on sound data and they like to get informed about the big picture." We thought informing them that 80% of their tax dollars goes to pay ample pay and benefit packages did precisely that. The mayor used it as an argument for hire taxes, we've used it as an argument for a pay freeze.
"I'd be obliged if you could show all of the Hingham/Newton numbers. Then we could have a conversation." When do we have to provide them? You're not the only person that wants our research?
"This is a great community" Yeah, but unfortunately, people like you are making it more unaffordable and less pleasant to live in with your constant demands for more taxes and spending programs.

Bill, we can only hope that they are smart enough to take the ideas suggested by Moving Newton Forward with Fiscal Responsibility and use them to improve Newton's financial position going forward.
If they adopt our ideas, they will never need to call another property tax hike through an override and if they don't, they'll never get one.
We won't be fooled again.
