It's Wellcoin Month in Newton

Find out what Wellcoin Month means for Newton.

Newton Mayor Setti Warren on Monday announced that July has been declared "Wellcoin Month" in the Garden City.

In May, Warren was on-hand at Whole Foods Market to announce Newton as a Wellcoin Model City, the first city partner for the newly launched Internet health currency company founded by Glenn Laffel, a Newton resident and former cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Wellcoin is a "healthy decisions" and "virtual currency" company that rewards participants with Wellcoins when they make healthy decisions. Those coins can be redeemed at partner businesses throughout the city.

During July, a number of events will be taking place throughout the city to commemorate Wellcoin Month, the first of which will occur at Gath Memorial Pool on Tuesday, July 9.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Warren will meet with residents at Gath Pool to help spread the word about Wellcoin, according to a press release from the mayor's office. Additionally, Laffel, Wellcoin's founder, will be on-hand to sign people up for the program and provide demonstrations of the online portal.

The next event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 23, when Warren will visit Pinkberry at The Street in Chestnut Hill. Pinkberry is a Wellcoin partnering business and will offer a special "Wellcoin flavor" of its frozen yogurt.
