Suspected Shoplifter's Return to CVS Leads to Arrest

A man that police say shoplifted from a Newton CVS twice in less than a week was arrested Sunday after a foot chase and K-9 pursuit.

Guillermo Torres, of 641 Tremont Street, Boston, was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of larceny over $250 and one count of receiving stolen property over $250. Police also found there are six outstanding warrants for Torres.

According to a police press release, an employee at the CVS on Watertown Street contacted police after spotting a man in the store that she recognized from a photo posted in the office area. The photo was from a shoplifting incident on Tuesday, June 25, during which more than $1,800 of merchandise was stolen. After the employee called police Sunday, she watched the suspect fill his backpack with merchandise, the press release reads.

As police were responding to the store, the suspect left and police received an update with his description. An officer enroute to CVS spotted the suspect walking toward him and order the suspect to stop and open his backpack.

The press release states that the suspect dropped his backpack and motorcycle helmet and fled. After a brief chase, Newton K-9 Officer Dan Valente and Dakota arrived at the scene. Dakota ultimately located the suspect hiding in a shed in the rear of an address on Los Angeles Street.

The recovered backpack contained $335.90-worth of merchandise. In addition, police located the suspect's vehicle and found more than $500 of CVS merchandise inside.
