Newton Police Department Promotes Three Members

A new captain, lieutenant and sergeant were sworn in Friday.

A packed room at Newton Police Headquarters watched Friday as three Newton police officers were promoted during an 11:30 a.m. swearing-in ceremony.

Capt. Dennis P Berube, Lt. Dennis Geary and Sgt. Peter Wade accepted the oath administered by Newton Mayor Setti Warren and received their pins from loved ones.

"I want to first of all congratulate those who are being promoted today," Warren told the gathered crowd. "Clearly distinguished background, careers here in the police department. We're proud of you. Thank you very much. We're really proud of all of you."

Capt. Dennis P. Berube
Capt. Dennis P. Berube is a 29-year veteran of the Newton Police Department. Born and raised in Newton, he graduated from Newton North High School in 1980 and was hired by the Newton PD in 1983.

His first assignment was in the Patrol Bureau where he worked as a patrol officer until 1995. Later that year he was assigned to the Community Services Bureau where he served as a youth officer. While there he served as the attendance officer for the Newton Public School Suystem, and as our juvenile liaison officer in the Newton District Court.

In the fall of 2000, he was assigned to the Detective Bureau where he performed the duties of a detective until his promotion in sergeant in July 2004. Once promoted, Berube was reassigned to the Patrol Bureau, Third Platoon, from July 2004 through September 2007. From September 2007 to November 2009, Berube served as the night detective sergeant.

Promoted to the rank of lieutenant in November 2009, he has since been serving in the Patrol Bureau. Capt. Berube's father, Henry Berube, is a retired Newton police officer who retired after 32 years of honorable service to the City of Newton.

Capt. Berube holds a Master's degree in criminal justice from Weston New England College. He resides in Newton with his wife, Susan, his daughter, Madison and his son, Brenden. Berube's new badge was pinned by his wife.
Lt. Dennis Geary
Lt. Dennis Geary is a 29-year veteran of the Newton Police Department. He was born and raised in West Newton; he graduated from Newton North High School in 1974 and was hired by the Newton Police Department in 1983.

In 1989, he was trained as a DARE officer for the Community Services Bureau. He also served as a media relations officer. Geary was assigned as the safety officer in 1994. He was responsible for hiring, training and supervising the 62 traffic supervisors and 12 traffic control officers. He continued as media relations officer. Geary was the Newton civil rights officer and was the police representative to the Newton Human Rights Commission. Geary also served on the Newton Council on Aging and the Newton Bicycle/Pedestrian Task Force.

In 1999, Geary became the communications officer for the department. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2004. He served as night patrol sergeant from 2004 to the present.

Geary holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in human relations from Salem College in West Virginia; a Master's degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College and is a Certified Nonprofit Professional. 

Geary resides in Newton with his wife Ellen and they have four children: Dennis, Ellen, Patrick and Austin. Geary was pinned by his son, Army Sgt. Dennis Geary.

Sgt. Peter A. Wade
Sgt. Peter A. Wade was raised in Everett and graduated from Pope John High School in 2000. He attended Bridgewater State College and in 2004 graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in history. 

Wade was then commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he spent two years in Japan and a seven-month deployment to Iraq as a platoon commander.

In april 2009, then police candidate Wade received the honor graduate award from the MBTA Transit Police Academy. Wade was hired by the Newton PD in October 2009 and has served in the Patrol Bureau working nights assigned to the Third Platoon.

Wade received his Master of Science in criminal justice from Anna Maria College in 2010. He was a recipient of the Newton Police Department's Medal of Valor in April 2011 for jeopardizing his own personal safety when he attempted to locate and evacuate potential victims at the scene of a house fire on Auburndale Avenue. 

Wade's badge was pinned by his girlfriend, Kelly O'Malley.
