Violent Crimes, Property Crimes Both Down in Newton

The FBI's Uniform Crime Report is released each fall.

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Report shows that violent crimes and property crimes in Newton dropped 2012.

The FBI's annual report includes information submitted by local law enforcement agencies. The information is compiled and released to the public in the fall after the reporting year.

There were 76 reported violent crimes in Newton in 2012, which is down from 80 in 2011 and 86 in 2010. Violent crime includes murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

There were no murders reported in Newton in 2012, but five forcible rapes. There were two reported forcible rapes in 2011 and six in 2010.

With 54 aggravated assaults reported in 2012, it shows a down trend from 59 to 2010, and 65 in 2011.

Property crimes continue to be the most reported crimes in Newton. There were 894 property crimes reported in 2012, which is down from 1,181 in 2011 but down from 1,212 in 2010.

After an increase in burglaries in 2011, those crimes dropped in 2012. There were 185 burglaries in 2012 compared to 212 in 2011. The 2012 numbers are higher than 2010 when 170 burglaries were reported in Newton.

Robberies ticked down slightly in 2012 with 17 reported compared to 19 in 2011, but up from 2010 when there were 15.

Larceny-thefts dropped significantly to 693 reports in 2012, which was down from 942 in 2011 and 2010 when there were 1,016.

There were 16 motor vehicle thefts reported in 2012, which is down from 27 in 2011 and 26 in 2010.

There were two arson crimes in 2012, after having three in 2011 and one in 2010.
