One Team Title, One Individual Championship for Newton North

See how the Tigers did in the state finals this weekend.

One Newton North team came home as champs, while another fell short. The Tigers also had an individual state champion.

The girls' soccer team could not score in regulation or overtime in the Div. 1 state final against Minnechaug, but the Tigers came up big in the penalty shootout in the game at Worcester State on Friday evening. 

The teams remained tied in the shootout after five rounds, and in the sixth round junior Katie Nugent booted in her shot to give Newton North the 3-2 win in the penalty kicks, according to the report in the Boston Globe.

Tigers goalkeeper Maddie Bledsoe saved one of the shots in the shootout, and Minnechaug missed others.

The Tigers completed an unbeaten season, at 19-0-2.

Girls' Volleyball

After a run through the Div. 1 girls' volleyball tournament, Newton North ran into an undefeated and three-time defending champ Barnstable team on Saturday at Algonquin High School in Northborough, according to the report on Boston.com.

The Red Raiders swept the Tigers 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-11). Newton North finishes the season 19-3.

Cross Country

Newton North Senior Gabe Montague won the MIAA Div. 1 All State Cross Country individual title by running a 14:27 on the race course at the Gardner Municipal Golf Course on Saturday, according to results on Milesplit.com.

Tiger teammate Mike Schlichting finished fourth with a time of 14:45. Newton North finished 11th in the team competition.

Newton South finished 11th in the girls Div. 1 All State Meet, and the Lions' top finisher was Rebecca Grusby, who finished 25th with a time of 18:02, according to Milesplit.com.
